Marginal captions 3/5/06
I noticed a few odd captions in Yahoo! News last week.
First there was this one:
Palestinian demonstrators carry olive trees in a mock funeral, next to Israeli border police, during a demonstration against the construction of Israel’s separation barrier in the West Bank village of Beit Sira, near Ramallah, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006. Israel is building a West Bank security barrier for the declared purpose of preventing Palestinian militants from attacking Israeli towns and cities. Parts of the barrier are in the West Bank, and the Palestinians condemn it as a land grab. (AP Photo/Muhammed Muheisen)
Um, where did they get these olive trees from? Did they cut them down? I though that it was the evil settlers who do that.
And while there’s been lots of discussion of Khaled Dahdouh’s recent accident I meant to focus on this caption
The Israeli military, which frequently carries out pinpointed attacks against militants in Gaza, said it was not involved. Islamic Jihad vowed revenge for the death of Dahdouh, who they said had survived nine Israeli attempts on his life.
9 attempts? What was he? A cat?
Finally, there was this
A Russian police officer smiles as he detaines a protester, a member of the radical movement Oborona (Defense), carrying a loat of bread outside the Palestinian Embassy in Moscow, Friday, March 3, 2006. . . . The bread was part of a planned symbolic protest against the Hamas’ visit. (AP Photo/Ivan Sekretarev )
What’s this group Oborona? According to Wikipedia The
movement opposes what they call an authoritarian vector of Russian policy. They claim that president Vladimir Putin destroys democracy institutions and aims to establish an authoritarian police state in Russia. The movement espouses nonviolent resistance to the authorities.
But AP refers to Oborona as a “radical movement.” Is objecting to creeping authoratarianism “radical?” Is objecting to people blowing themselves up and taking as many others with them as possible “radical?”
And what is a movement that advocate blowing things and people up? Is it not radical?
I’m so confused.
Technorati tags: Oborona, Hamas, Russia.
