Uzi Landau: Israel’s “Churchill”

By Jerry Gordon

“We must have victory at all costs. Otherwise there is no survival.” Uzi Landau, veteran Israel opposition politician frequently invoked the classic Churchillian turn of phrase drawn from the second volume in the series, “Alone” to describe Israel in 2006 analogous to Britain in dark period of May 1940. Nearly, two more years were to come before the U.S. would enter the fight as an ally of beleagured Britian to eventually crush the Axis powers and vanquish Fascism.

Listening to Uzi Landau speak in the U.S. this week at closed meetings with influentials in the American Jewish community, at universities here in the northeast and in synagogues along the east coast one was struck with his clear vision of what is occurring in the Middle East and, most notably, here in America. In the wake of the release of the Baker Hamilton Iraq Study Group (ISG) Report, Landau calls it patent “appeasement.”

He said the ISG report represented a ‘flip of the coin to begin negotiations with the backers of terrorism in the world and the Middle East .”

He indicated that U.S. Secretary of Defense Gates, who was recently overwhelmingly confirmed by the U.S. Senate effectively said “don’t attack” Iran.` Landau views statements like that as a ‘green light’ for President Ahmadinejad of Iran to develop nuclear weapons and long range missiles for the express purpose of delivering them to wipe out Israel.

It is Western debility which emboldens Iran , its President audaciously supporting terrorism in Iraq , Lebanon and the Palestinian territories with the aid of its puppet Syria and proxies Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and Hamas. According to Landau, radical Islamist Iran wants to dominate the Muslim world via the Shia crescent in the Middle East and ultimately even threaten the U.S. eventually with nuclear tipped ICBMs aimed at our shores.’

He forecasts that 10 years from now the Iranian President would call our President and tells him bluntly that New York City would be under threat of nuclear annihilation, if the U.S. military blocked the Persian Gulf and threatened Tehran . The annihilation of Israel is the first stop on the Iranian “grand tour of destruction.”

In early 1940, Winston Churchill, then First Lord of British Admiralty, warned European neutrals of dangers lurking over the horizon and asked them to join the Allies, presaging worse to come. But they feared German threats of violence. Each power hoped the storm would pass and “the other” instead would be devoured. Israel is “the other,” Uzi Landau warns us all. The core of his message about Israel being the ‘rock’ in a raging sea of Islamofascist hate in the Middle East analogous to Britain ‘alone’ in May of 1940 with Hitler’s Nazi Germany dominant in Europe across the channel from the fabled ‘white cliffs of Dover’ is errily Churchillian.

Let us hope that Uzi Landau can end his ‘wildeness year’ return to the fray of Israel politics and become a nasi (a prince) to lead his country and people with characteristic courage, integrity and vision for renewing the Zionist dream.
