Even NJDC Can’t Whitewash Obama-Sharpton Connection
by Bill Levinson
A good strategist pays attention to what his enemy does not do, as well as what he does. NJDC’S Guide to Responding to Obama, Clinton, and Edwards Smears aimed at Jewish Voters actually makes some valid points, but one is conspicuous in its absence: the prominent racist and anti-Semite Al Sharpton. We know quite well from prior experience that the National Jewish Democratic Council would lie on Obama’s behalf, or whitewash and downplay his failings, if it were conceivably possible to do so. The fact that NJDC does not address Obama’s blatant promotion of Al Sharpton and his National Action Network proves that (1) even NJDC can’t deny with a straight face that he did this and (2) there is no conceivable defense for doing it. We invite all of Obama’s opponents to pay close attention to this fact.
To recap, the National Action Network is the very same organization that paraded around a Jewish-owned store in Harlem while shouting racial and anti-Semitic epithets like “bloodsucking Jews,” “Jew bastards,” “cracker lover,” and “white interloper”–the latter from Sharpton himself. The group also yelled an arson threat that a deranged individual later acted on with the loss of seven innocent lives (plus that of the arsonist, who committed suicide). Again, everybody who wants to destroy Obama’s fairy-tale (horror story is more descriptive) candidacy should observe that neither the Obama campaign nor the NJDC can deny or defend Obama’s open promotion and empowerment of an individual and an organization with proven records of racist and anti-Semitic conduct. We encourage our readers to write appropriate letters to the editor, especially in Dutchess County New York where Sharpton and his entourage perpetrated the Tawana Brawley scandal and damaged the lives of innocent people.
Having said this, the NJDC does make some good points that those who are working to bring down Obama’s campaign should take to heart. A lie, or a weak argument, hurts one’s own side far worse than it hurts the other side. It strengthens the other side by demonstrating to the world that you have to make things up, or use weak arguments, because you have no strong arguments. An analogy is the use of a pea shooter against a tank; it does the tank no harm, and it tells its occupants that you don’t have an anti-tank weapon. In such cases, it is better to do nothing at all. In our case, we have the political equivalent of a nuclear weapon (Obama’s ongoing promotion and empowerment of a professional bigot and his hate organization) so we should use it instead of the following pea shooters. NJDC says,
(1) CNN reports “Allegations that Sen. Barack Obama was educated in a radical Muslim school known as a ‘madrassa’ are not accurate, according to CNN reporting.” The complete report is available online here in a report entitled “CNN debunks false report about Obama.”
(2) The false “madrassa” rumors were published in a right wing smear magazine owned by the same company that owns the ultra-conservative Washington Times. These are the same people who have printed numerous falsehoods about the Clintons through the years.
(3) The Obama campaign has a fact sheet on its website which serves as an excellent resource about his background and sets the record straight about his religion. While Obama’s religion should not be a political issue, lying about a candidate’s religion is noteworthy. The fact sheet explains that, despite lies saying otherwise, Obama “is not and has never been a Muslim.”
We have previously said that “Obama is a Muslim” is a self-destructive argument. The argument that a Muslim (as opposed to an Islamic supremacist) is not qualified to be President is as offensive as the argument that a Negro, Jew, Catholic, Mormon, Asian, or Hispanic is not qualified to be President.* Since Obama is not an Islamic supremacist, this line of attack should be dropped immediately if not sooner.
Scurrilous emails have also been circulating which attempt to smear Senator Obama because a magazine associated with his church gave an award to Louis Farrakhan. In the response to inquiries about Farrakhan, Obama repudiated and decried Farrakhan and his anti-Semitism. He was praised by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for so-doing.
Now NJDC falls back on its usual half-truths, because it was not just a “magazine associated with Obama’s church” that gave an award to Farrakhan, it was Obama’s racist minister: Jeremiah Wright, who said “white America” got its “wake up call” on 9/11. We have not read of Obama’s repudiation of Farrakhan but, if he did so, we really cannot attack him on this issue. Perhaps he should quit this church, however, to show that he really means it. There are plenty of churches in the Chicago area that do not promote racism or hate-mongers like Farrakhan.
Again, however, there is no need to use the political counterpart of a pea shooter when you have the political equivalent of a nuke. It is a fact that Barack Obama appeared with Al Sharpton at the National Action Network. It is a fact that Obama endorsed and promoted Sharpton and his loathsome organization of racists and Jew-baiters. It is a fact that Obama appeared with Sharpton again this November. It is also a fact that Sharpton played a central role in the Tawana Brawley scandal, the Crown Heights riots, and the Freddy’s Fashion Mart incident. If his opponents act on this, all NJDC’s horses and all NJDC’s men won’t put Obama’s candidacy together again.
