Obama’s Church and Black Liberation Theology

by Bill Levinson

Res ipsa loquitur, the thing speaks for itself. The following is not from any Republican or Clintonite Web site or blog. It is directly from the Trinity United Church of Christ, of which Barack Hussein Obama has been a member since 1988.

Talking Points

Dr. Wright’s talking points (3.1.7) for Trinity United Church of Christ its Web site and the Black Value System (in response to Erik Rush’s comments (2.28.07) on the Hannity and Colmes show):

• One of the biggest gaps in knowledge that causes the kind of ignorance that you hear spouted by this man [Erik Rush] and those like him, has to do with the fact that these persons are completely ignorant when it comes to the Black religious tradition. The vision statement of Trinity United Church of Christ is based upon the systematized liberation theology that started in 1969 with the publication of Dr. James Cone’s book, Black Power and Black Theology.

What is Black Liberation Theology, anyway?

Obama’s Mentor’s Mentor
By Lee Cary

The Trinity UCC website was updated early this year. Before that, Cone’s book was singled out as required reading for Trinity parishioners who wished to more thoroughly understand the church’s theology and mission. That highlighting was removed. Jason Byassee, of The Christian Century Magazine, wrote this about Cone and Trinity in May, 2007:

“There is no denying, however, that a strand of radical black political theology influences Trinity [UCC]. James Cone, the pioneer of black liberation theology, is a much-admired figure at Trinity. Cone told me that when he’s asked where his theology is institutionally embodied, he always mentions Trinity. Cone’s groundbreaking 1969 book Black Theology and Black Power announced: “The time has come for white America to be silent and listen to black people. . . . All white men are responsible for white oppression. . . . Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man ‘the devil.’. . . Any advice from whites to blacks on how to deal with white oppression is automatically under suspicion as a clever device to further enslavement.”

Res ipsa loquitur, the thing speaks for itself.

    Huh?
I imagine if I were Black, I would find some days waking up a bit pissed off too.
What is the correlation between his thoughts on White people and that of a church founder?
Did anyone mention that Mormoms up until recently believed that Black people were devils? Did this ever come up in debate or through underhanded discussion about the Republican Romney?
Bush is a Methodist. Any discussion on how the Methodist church screwed Israel? Can we assume Bush screws Israel because he is a Methodist or because he is a Saudi suck-up? Are all Methodists who are not Saudi suck-ups also anti-Israel?

So what if a Black Church assumes Black assertiveness. Who could blame them? They are Christians and they are Black. They could convert but they are still Black and they are non-Blacks are always well aware of it.

Are people scared because Blacks do not follow the same Church ideology of their former slave masters?

Any Jew willing to praise Ba’al in synagogue, because we were once slaves in Egypt?

    Erratta.
    The above should read:
“They are Christians and they are Black. They could convert tomorrow but they are still Black — and they and non-Blacks are always well aware of it.”
