Israel is only a word or two away from reaching an agreement that will give it many of the same rights afforded states within the European Union.
"We are close to concluding this chapter in the action plan. It's just a question of one or two words," said EU President Bernard Bot, who is also the Dutch foreign minister.
According to a Foreign Ministry spokesman there is only a small section of text, dealing with weapons of mass destruction in the region, that hasn't been agreed upon.
"It's up to Israel to make one little step and we will make a major step in accommodating the Israelis," Bot said at a two-day Euro-Mediterranean Partnership conference.
The program, known as the European Neighborhood policy, offers free access to goods, services, people and capital to countries outside the European Union in exchange for economic and political reform.
Other countries slated to attain this status are Moldova, Ukraine, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and the Palestinian Authority.
The Netherlands on Monday agreed to outlaw Hizbullah, adding it hoped its EU partners will follow suit.

Are you saying that Israel wants to join the EU? I'd be awfully careful about associating too closely with them. European countries are in the process of abdicating their sovereinty to bureaucrats in Brussels.

ugh... On giant leap for Israeli Eurofetishism.
My cousin worked for some time in Tel-Aviv, and once durring a political discussion with co-workers, a woman mentioned that as long as Israel was a member of the EU we had to abide by their laws.... She was heart broken to find out that Israel wasn't a member.
I hail from America, so it's always been a mystery how Israeli's could be so PROUD to be israeli, but at the same time so cravenly imitative of... everyone! Mostly they seem to lust after Europe, and it's secular social eutopianism. I'll grant you, that Israels economy could benefit tremendously from open access to European markets. However my first reaction is that this is just motivated by Europhilia; at the cost, potentialy, of even more of Israel's political sovignty.
What is it going to take for Israeli's to accept the fact that no one likes them, and never will? For such a tough bunch of butt kickers, they do allot of butt kissing in an effort to 'be accepted' in the circle of nations.
We've proven it so many times, that Israel can do without, and sometimes better without forign kindness. Look at Teva, they are the worlds largest generic drug manufacturer. Israeli aerospace, weapons, diamonds, agrotech, high tech, are all flourishing with little or no help from 'loved ones'.
I'd rather take a pay cut than a cut in my secuirty any day.
