Gary Bauer's commentary on the dead rat
Is He Or Isn't He?
By Gary Bauer
The death watch on Yasser Arafat continues today. In the last 72 hours he has been pronounced dead a half-dozen times only for each report to be eventually retracted. Whenever he leaves this earth, one thing is certain - Arafat's legacy is spilled blood, ripped flesh and broken bones. He is the father of modern day terrorism, whose hatred for the Jews and for Israel consumed his whole life. Tens of millions of dollars meant for the Palestinian people found its way instead into secret Arafat bank accounts. Yet he was able to seduce Bill Clinton and visited the Clinton White House more than any other so-called "world leader." President Bush wasn't fooled, however. He took the measure of this monster early on and refused to bargain with him.
There is tremendous hope that his passing will increase the chances for Middle East peace. There is a serious flaw in this reasoning. Arafat may be dead or dying, but his "culture of death" permeates the Palestinian body politic. Music, films, books, teachers, mosques all deliver the same message to generation after generation of Palestinian children -- "Kill the Jew!"
Prime Minister Sharon, with White House encouragement, is proceeding with his plan to withdraw from Gaza. A new poll of Palestinians out today shows that if the withdrawal is completed, 57% of Palestinians want to use Gaza as a launching pad for more attacks to destroy Israel. Arafat will die, but his twisted spirit will live on!
