Appeasement and retreat along the entire front
Appeasement and retreat along the entire front
In the good old days, reports from Israel would include one act of appeasement a day. Recently, these acts come as a tsunami. One single AP report, as presented below, highlights no less than six acts of appeasement in one day.
Read and weep.
1. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Monday he will seek final Cabinet approval for a Gaza withdrawal in February, four months earlier than planned.
Just can't wait to reward terrorists.
2. When Sharon unveiled his plan early this year, he envisioned the pullout as a unilateral act, saying there was no serious Palestinian negotiating partner.
But since the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Nov. 11, Sharon has said he would be willing to coordinate the withdrawal with the new Palestinian leadership if it cracks down on militants.
Unilateralism was the essence of the plan, but if it's part of a negotiated settlement, euphemistically called "coordination", then General Feet-of-water is giving up territory for absolutely nothing at all.
3. Israel has quietly backed Abbas, who is considered a moderate, and has approved a series of measures meant to facilitate next month's voting.
The problem here is that Abu Mazen, apart from being a Holocaust denier, has pledged to follow in Arafat footsteps, and specified his demands re complete Israeli retreat, Jerusalem and the fictitious "right of return". That's moderate?
4. In another gesture to Abbas, Israel released 159 Palestinian prisoners Monday. Abbas welcomed the release but said Israel must free the thousands of prisoners still serving lengthy terms.
This is the old Arab tactic which Churchill loathed so much: whatever is given is never enough, and the Arabs always return to their maximalist demands.
5. Mohammed Dahlan, a former Palestinian security chief, was permitted to meet Barghouti in prison on Monday. Dahlan said he and Barghouti would favor a cease-fire and resumption of peace talks if Israel halts "aggression" against the Palestinians.
Well, why not simplify matters further and transfer the convicted serial murderer to Club Med?
6. Meanwhile, Israeli police detained Palestinian candidate Mustafa Barghouti, a distant relative to the imprisoned leader, in the Old City of Jerusalem, claiming he was in the area illegally. He was released after several hours, an aide said.
Simply released? No charges? Staying illegally is no problem?
Perhaps the most troubling statement accompanying this news is the following:
Sharon says the continued occupation of Gaza, where 8,200 settlers live amid 1.3 million Palestinians, is untenable. Jewish settlements in Gaza come under attack daily.
This one sentence says: (i) terrorism pays; (ii) continued terrorism on Ashkelon, say, will achieve the same result; (iii) if 8,200 pioneers living among 1.3 million Arabs is "untenable", then by implication, so is 6,000,000 Israelis living among 300,000,000 Arabs or 1.25 billion Muslims.
I repeat my profound concern: Israel has lost the fire in the belly and is committing suicide right in front of our eyes. Orde Charles Wingate is definitely turning in his grave in consternation and frustration.

Sharing Joseph Alexander Norland's profound concern on seeing Israel committing suicide right in front of our eyes, I refuse to weep, but thank heavens that I am not sitting in the same boat or car that the madmen and/or -women are steering into desaster.
Since Israel is a democracy, it deserves what it got and will get, including the deficiencies of its electoral system after more than 50 years of sovereign statehood. Israel does not even deserve the support and pity of its friends like IsraPundit. In the first place, pro-Israel advocacy is the job of Israel's elected Government and Parliament. If Jews decide to give away Judea, so be it!
I would prefer to blame it on the Saudi-friend in the White House, who is willing to give away Judea to the Arab Amalekites, but if the Jews don't want Judea, their holy ancestral home, and divine birthright, who are others to say they must keep it.
A friend who is about to commit suicide has a serious mental problem, and may be suffering from permanent or temporary insanity, which urgently requires treatment. Israel itself must learn to be pro-Israel, irrespective of its few friends and many enemies. As the Talmud puts it, "Im ain ani li, mi li?" -- if Israel isn't pro-Israel, why should anybody else be? Israel must learn to love itself enough so as not to commit suicide. Jews must regain self-respect and Jewish National Pride!
