Canaries

Aaron Mannes in hisProfiles in Terror writes:

The Colegio Hebraica, the private Jewish school in Caracas was raided by Venezuelan police on Monday, November 29. The raid took place at 6:30 AM, just as students were arriving for the start of the school day.

The state media had been trumpeting that the Mossad had played a role in the recent assassination of State Prosecutor Danilo Anderson. Anderson, who was initially charged with prosecuting environmental crimes, was handling all of the high profile political prosecutions - including that of the accused anti-Chavez coup plotters. Arrests related to this investigation have targeted prominent citizens and resulted in several shootouts. The investigation of Anderson's murder is being used as an excuse to crack down on Venezuelan civil society. The putative Mossad connection was the excuse for the raid on the Colegio Hebraica.

Jews have always been the canary in the coal mine. When they are attacked, everyone's freedom is in jeopardy.

Funny, but I didn't recall reading about this in the Washington Post or NY Times. In fact a quick search for "Colegio Hebraica" at the Google news site and here's my results. 4 entries. One from the New York Sun, one a press release from the American Jewish Committee and two from a Venezeulan news website.
(rant on)Imagine for a moment that Israeli Border Police or Army troops had entered a Palestinian university. Do you have any doubt that you would have read about it the NY Times or Washington Post or heard about it from Robert Berger of CBS? And don't you believe that even if the Israelis had found explosives in said university that the raid itself would have raised significant "concerns" by said news organizations?(rant off)
Aaron credits his report to:

Daniel at Venezuela News and Views. Daniel's terrific blog exemplifies what a blog can do to bring critical but overlooked news and intelligent, informed analysis to a broader audience.

Aaron is correct. Truthfully, I never would have noticed this item if Aaron hadn't brought it up. And it bothers me because few apparently care.
Hugo Chavez, whose stolen election was endorsed by Jimmy Carter, has now declared war on the Jewish community of Venezuela. I think that Aaron's correct. When Jews become scapegoats it's a bad sign. We are canaries.
