Freedom of expression under General Sharon Bonaparte
Freedom of expression under General Sharon Bonaparte
Regardless of how obnoxious the cause and how inappropriate the protest, in North America we assume that the right to protest within the limits of the law is a basic right.
But not, it appears, under General Sharon Bonaparte.
Two news stories in today's JPost corroborate this assertion.
Example 1: "Settlers with orange badges forced out of Knesset"
Residents of the Gush Katif settlements bloc, joined by other Israelis protesting the disengagement plan, were asked to leave the Knesset Wednesday afternoon after several demonstrators placed on their clothes an orange Star of David.
Well, at least they were not (yet) thrown in jail.
Example 2: "Education Ministry bans Orange Stars from schools"
The Education Ministry banned the wearing of Orange Star badges from public schools on Wednesday.
At the same time, Ariel "Feet-of-Water" Sharon is caving in to pressure at every turn. The latest is reported today by
JPost as follows:
Israel considers relinquishing security control at Gaza ports
Israel is willing to consider the possibility of letting a third party take over security at Gaza Strip naval and aerial ports after the disengagement plan is carried out, Nigel Roberts, the World Bank's country director for the West Bank and Gaza Strip, told The Jerusalem Post.
Israel has refused in the past any suggestion of allowing third parties to gain on-land presence in the West Bank and Gaza, as it feared that this will lead to the internationalization of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
I just wonder how many Karin A's are preparing to set sail as I write.
What is one to do when one sees a dear friend commit suicide?
