Iran must be contendted withCommentsNo question that Iran is a key force in the Middle East. This was clearly established when Ted posted the Kareh Afrasiabi article"China rocks the geopolitical boat" in the 6 Nov 04 Asia Times. China has agreed to a US$100 Billion contract with Iran for LPG and related energy programs. The dangerous situation is still dangerous and soon to be very fragile. Arnaud deBorchgrave is usually accurate and "level-headed". I would suggest not to consider "shared values" as the "new glue" of the Middle East. It's still better to rely on interests. It's still the same ol' place. When Israel oses its US Congressional appropriation(s), the IDF fleet of 1,000 aircraft will evolve into a spare parts center and junk. The kibbutz guards will evolve into volunteer guards - if the kibbutz is still in existence. China and India are only competitive with Western countries in hi-tech because of the welfare state. This can change in the US but probably not western Europe. Arnard deBorchgrave writings are used for deliberations within the councils of US society. Israel is not ready. Kol tuv,

Iran must be contendted with
These articles make the case that Iran is a major player in the Middle East.
One cannot ignore the jockeying for position of the three forces in the ME, namely the Shites (headed by Iran and located in Iran, Iraq and around the oil fields in Saudi Arabia), the Sunnies representing 80% of the Islamic world inclcuding Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt)and the US.
