The Prime Minister has a fixation on his disengagement plan with such a determination that he "would sell his grandmother" for his plan. He fired two Ministers, had two Ministers resign from his original cooperating partners and dismissed three of his Likud Ministers who refused to accept his disengagement. He did not sell his grandmother, but he sold his Likud
ideology and caused much hatred among his own veteran Likud leaders.
In the Likud hall a picture was taken of the Prime Minister shaking hands with Shimon Peres. In the background was a large picture of Menahem Begin. Remembering Begin as we knew him well, he would certainly turn over in his grave in disgust over the actions of his successor and of his companion.
In Israel we have had two real unity Governments. The first was at the critical period before the Six Day War of June, 1967, when 112 Knesset Members were represented in the unity Government. The second was a rotating type of unity Government with 100 Knesset Members represented. This is a far cry from the present Unity Government of 64.
It is in this rotation that Shimon Peres was Prime Minister. Peace negotiations were proceeding in Madrid at the initiative of the United States. There was a law on the books forbidding contact with the enemy Yasser Arafat who had been driven out of Lebanon by Minister of Defense Ariel Sharon. Arafat, a defeated terrorist who began terror attacks at age 17, found refuge in Tunis.
In violation of the law, Peres and his associate Yossi Beilin through the late Foreign Minister of Norway made contact with Arafat and the Oslo Accords became a "peace treaty". The law was revised and Arafat came to Israel. The Oslo Accords and Arafat's Intifada cost us some 1,500 murdered and over 2,500 wounded. This "villain" Shimon Peres, a six time loser including a defeat by his own party for the position of President, is now being rewarded by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with the post of Vice Prime Minister of the State of Israel. It turns our stomach at this ridiculous turn of events.
Shimon Peres should be investigated by the Attorney General for violating the law and for taking Arafat out of the ash can and bringing him to Israel and arming him as well. Instead of dealing in "principles" the negotiations were on the number
of Ministries each party would get. Labor will get eight top Cabinet positions: Interior, Housing, Infrastructure, Tourism, Communications, two Ministers without portfolios, three Deputy Ministers and a special portfolio for the Vice President Shimon Peres. United Torah Judaism receives Ministry of Welfare, Chairman of the Finance Committee and a
deputy in the office of the Prime Ministry in charge of religious affairs.
They go along with the disengagement plan in exchange for promised financing. The Shas Party had followed the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef against disengagement now but would reconsider if a real partner for peace is found. Former General Effie Etam Chairman, of the Mafdal (National Religious Party), warned the U.T.J. Party that the violation of the Shabbat is but a forerunner of similar things to come. Eitam was the principal leader of withdrawal from the Government because of the Gush Katif danger of removing this beautiful sector of Israel. We feel that this was a major political error.
Opposing from the outside has a political term describing a truism. "It is very cold outside and gets colder". We insisted that there be no withdrawal from the Government because the door would be open to Labor, a sure disaster. You battle from the inside as former Minister of Welfare Zevuln Orlev recommended, but was forced out. We still stand by our
recommendation that any removal of Gush Katif be a relocation of Gush Katif as a unit to a place of their choice in coordination with the Prime Minister.
This current situation will be a disaster. The decision to "work with a partner for peace" is absolutely a non starter. The Candidate Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the P.L.O., vows no concessions on the right of return. His plan is that of Arafat. Flood the entire area with millions of "refugees" and they will destroy Israel. Arafat hurried the process with continued terror.
Abbas could not get even a cease fire until the election in January from Fatah, Aksa Martyrs Brigade, Islamic Jihad and Hamas. He has no control nor will he get control later. The war on terror continues on a 24 hour basis now and for a long time to come. Egyptian President Hosni Mubrak sees a possibility of a Palestinian State in 2008.
We do not see it at all at any time, unless it comes down from the Heavens Above.
ISRAEL AS I SEE IT: A UNITY GOVERNMENT -- HARDLY, by Samson Krupnick

Last Thursday, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Labor head Shimon Peres were casting insults at each other. On Friday and Saturday they negotiated and concluded a "deal" for a so called "Unity Government". Likud has 40 Knesset Members, Labor has 19 Members and United Torah Judaism (Agudat Israel) has 5. Of the 120 Knesset membership the unity Government, when approved by the Knesset, will be 64. Obviously, this will be a mighty slim unity Government with a sharp division within each of the three parties.
The Prime Minister has a fixation on his disengagement plan with such a determination that he "would sell his grandmother" for his plan. He fired two Ministers, had two Ministers resign from his original cooperating partners and dismissed three of his Likud Ministers who refused to accept his disengagement.
