Canada's Silence on Iraqi Elections

Canada's Silence on Iraqi Elections

We Were There for Afghanis, Why Not Iraqis?

Ottawa – Stockwell Day, Official Opposition Critic for Foreign Affairs is asking the Prime Minister to deliver a clear and public message of support to the people of Iraq who will risk their lives for democracy on Sunday.

“The brave people of Iraq need to know they have the moral support of countries like Canada,” said Day. “We were there for the people of Afghanistan in their life and death struggle for freedom. Our government needs to be vocal in supporting the people of Iraq and in condemning the vicious powers which hate democracy and use terror.”

Day explained that he had advised the Minister of Foreign Affairs that some Canadians would have volunteered to go to Iraq as election monitors despite the risks. Day went on to say that it would have been a real boost of encouragement to embattled Iraqis, and indicated he had personally volunteered to go.

“Certainly, with full knowledge of the dangers there still would have been Canadians willing to go as a peaceful but powerful show of support,” Day remarked.

Day went on to explain that because Canada will not be there physically, our Prime Minister should publicly indicate his support for the brave citizens of Iraq. “Silence is not acceptable when freedom is at stake,” concluded Day.
