Confused about Richard Gere

Reuters reports that the "TV Appeal by Richard Gere Perplexes Palestinians," the Palestinian version of P Diddy.:

But many voters, already struggling with the labyrinthine politics of the West Bank and Gaza, say they have never heard of the actor who swept Debra Winger off her feet as a dashing Navy officer in the 1982 film "An Officer and a Gentleman" and were even less interested when they were told he's an American.

via Israelly Cool! we can sort this out. He links to The View from Here, who provides with this gem of a conversation of a couple of Palestinians figuring it out:

Muhammad: I didn't know Richard Gere was in Palestine.

Ahmed: I didn't know Richard Gere spoke Arabic.

Yusef: Who is Richard Gere?

Muhammad: He was fantasic in Sommersby.

Ahmed: Are you kidding me? Sommersby lacked whatever magical ingredient there is that makes a film a moving experience and instead settles for being an adequate but not a remarkable achievement.

Muhammad: I disagree. I felt that Sommersby was a winning and soul-stirring exploration of the spiritual meaning of one man's sacrificial death. It hit really close to home.

Yusef: Who is Richard Gere?

Ahmed: At least we can agree on Pretty Woman.

Muhammad: Indeed we can my brother. It's one of the few romantic comedies of the past 15 years that actually works. Few films have captured that amazing chemistry since.

Ahmed: Yes, It's as shamelessly irresistible as the Roy Orbison oldie that accompanies the credits. You know something? Richard Gere is right. Let's vote.

Yusef: Pretty Woman? Sounds vaguely familiar.

Ahmed: The Arabic name was "A Harem of One."

Yusef: Yes, this one I know. However, I believe that the whore should have been killed to perserve the family honor.

Muhammad: Good point, Yusef. Good point.
