2. Speaker of Israel's parliament endorses tree planting in Katif
The speaker's letter, in English, on official stationery, is reproduced in the Katif website.
3. More voices calling for a referendum or elections
Writing in the JPost, Evelyn Gordon begins her article thus:
As the internal infighting over disengagement worsens, Israelis are becoming increasingly convinced that the plan needs a clear public mandate.
That is evident from a recent newspaper poll published last Friday, which showed that while 58.7 percent of the public support disengagement, only 38.3 percent favor implementing it without a popular mandate.
Fully 54.6 percent of respondents said the plan should be conditioned on popular approval, though they disagreed about the means – 37.5 percent preferred a referendum, while 17.1 percent favored new elections.
Among Likud voters, the desire for popular approval is even more marked: Only 29.3 percent said that Knesset approval of the plan sufficed, while 65.9 percent demanded popular ratification (48.8 percent via a referendum and 17.1 percent via new elections).
Nevertheless, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon remains obstinately opposed.
Question: Would Napoleon have listened to the people? Then why would Rabin II?
Indeed, had the people of Israel been given a chance to express their view, I would have held my fire, and Resistance News would not have seen the light of day.
Note: "Resistance News" is a daily column devoted to news about the Jewish resistance to Sharon's expulsion and resettlement plan. Let it not be said that IsraPundit observed the ethnic-cleansing of Jews in Yesha and reacted with indifference.
