Rice issues peace plea to Israel
From the BBC

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has told Israel it must make "hard decisions" to advance the peace process with the Palestinians.

Ms Rice arrived on Sunday for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, before meeting Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Monday.

Her visit comes amid renewed hopes for progress, as Mr Sharon and Mr Abbas are due to hold talks in Egypt on Tuesday.

Ms Rice said this was "a time of optimism" in the Middle East.

Ahead of talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, she said: "We will ask of our partners and our friends in Israel that Israel continues to make the hard decisions that must be taken to promote peace and... the emergence of a democratic Palestinian state."

She said: "This is a time of opportunity and a time we must seize."

"Hard decisions"?? Like allowing more of our children to be shot in their beds, blown to pieces on busses, and suffer the trauma of daily rocket attacks???

What is truly amazing is that the same tired line has been coming out of the State department since time immemorial. And the White House never changes the tune. You would think that someone like Elliot Abrams would have more sense. Of course, should the President ever get up and demand that the collective Arab fiefdoms make the "hard decisions" to accept a Jewish political entity in their midst and resettle their Arab brothers and sisters in their vast territories so the Jews could have a defensible (er, make that "viable") sliver of land (er, make that "state"), there would be instant peace in the "Middle East."

The Saudis must have some pretty scary shit on the Bushies (or maybe its just a case of mutual ass-licking).

Running late today from a yesterday backup involving an urgent project in a non Islamic Middle East country;..

Will just add to Jeff's post; the Saudis also hold the 3rd largest amount of USG debt (bonds). One wrong move by the USG and none of us could afford telegraph keys hooked up to the web, let alone cars.
