Rice: Peace Cannot be Achieved Without a Palestinian State

Rice: Israel Must Withdraw from More than Gaza and Samaria (Be sure to read this.)

What a mouthful.

What about peace not being attainable without the defeat of terrorism? What about peace not be attainable without the Arabs abandonning their goal of destroying Israel? What about peace not being attainable without the Palestinians compromising?

Such a belief as she articulated was behind Bush recognition of the need for a Palestinian state and was behind the Roadmap calling for such a state to be viable and was behind the demand that there be a settlement freeze. It all started after the failure of Camp David where the US and EU started saying the Palestinians needed "hope".

Although Bush has continued to say all issues are to be freely negotiated he narrowed the range of issues to be left to negotiated. Oslo never limited settlement activity or called for a Palestinian state nor did it deny the "right of return" or the appropriateness of the pre '67 borders. (The latter two conditions are not yet as certain as they should be.)

Now these issues have all been taken off the table. In fact what is also missing from the table is the need for the borders to be secure. Security will come from peace not borders they say.

True that the creation of the state must be proceeded with the disarming and dismantling of the terrorist networks and the Roadmap requires all Arab States to make peace with Israel also.

All that being said, is a two state solution workable. Will it create more problems then it solves. Will Iran make peace with Israel?

The Road in the Roapmap is indeed a very long one.

Ted,

As I have said, Jews need to be extremely careful who they jump in bed with.

Although an Iraq free of Saddam is a wonderful thing, and Israel benefits from it, it does not mean that, in the end, Bush would do the 'right thing' for Israel.

Bush only does the 'right thing' that benefits big monied interests.

I have no doubt that this is taken into consideration in Israel, but I have my doubts that, once you jump in bed with them, it's not so easy jumping out.

What the article mentioned was already mentioned here at IsraPundit. The specifics are cross referenced under "Bernadotte Plan".

Associate Prime Minister Shimon Peres is 100% wrong. The connectionS (plural) are clearly shown on map 6 of attachments to the initial agreement signed by Y. Rabin on 28 Sep 95.

Also mentioned here at IsraPundit is a probable air connection between a rehabilitated Atarot and Dahaniyeh.
