Vanity of Vanities (Haveil Havalim), Edition 13, 2005_03_13

Welcome to Edition #13 of Vanity of Vanities (VoV), or Haveil Havalim, the weekly roundup of blogger posts on issue related to Israel and Jewish affairs.

If you want to know who's hosting next week, or if you want to volunteer in the future, email Soccer Dad at dhgerstman at hotmail dot com (please type "VoV" or "Vanity of Vanities" in your subject line so David can tell it's not spam).

The material below is based on submission made by authors - we call it "self-nomination".

Remember that by submitting entries to VoV you get free publicity, plus you render a service by informing people about your top posts.

Today, the first entry comes from Soccer Dad, who initiated VoV:

In a piece entitled, "Prerequisites for sovereignty", Soccer Dad highlights an old NY Times editorial that finds the Palestinians wanting when it comes to being deserving of independence.

Kesher Talk has contributed an article on "Academic Integrity and the Middle East - the speakers", which the author describes thus: "On Sunday March 6th, Scholars for Peace in the Middle East held a conference at Columbia University, on the pervasive bias against Jews and Israel in Middle East Studies Departments. This post - the first in a series on the conference - describes the amazing list of speakers". The occupation of academe by Israel's enemies is indeed a principal issue for Israel's supporters to deal with.

Interested in the Lebanon/Syria issue? In an article entitled "Extreme Lebanon", Seraphic Secret analyzes Syria's occupation of Lebanon, the good old days of Pan Arabism, the problem of Assad's lack of a chin, and how an Extreme Makeover could change the face of this particular occupation. All through the lens of an Emmy Award winning orthodox Hollywood screenwriter.

Y Not (an answer to Y Net?) is one of several bloggers who posted a piece about Peter (ro Zvi) Malkin (or Malchin). The piece, entitled simply, "Peter Z Malkin", "mentions PZM's passing; refers to his importance in Israeli history; and posts a poem, "The Crying Stones of Jerusalem", which PZM wrote".

From that great kingdom of Ernest Bevin and Oswald Mosley, Dodgeblogium writes on the topic of "Tories worried about Anti-Semitism". Introducing the piece, the author says, "With Mayor Ken acting like a judenhass scumbag and the Labour Party toying with anti-semitic images, it seems the Conservatives are starting to realise that things are getting unpleasant."

From IsraPundit come two recommendations: (i) Resistence News, a daily column on issues related to the Expulsion and Resettlement plot, the Saturday edition being at the foregoing link; and (ii) the interview with Prof Paul Merkley concerning the WCC, the link being here.

"A Jewish Reading Kick", at Gideon's Blog is the title of a series of posts, of which this link is one. According to the author the post provides "Ruminations on Jewish writing, thinking and history, prompted by the coincidence that the author read several Jewish books in rapid succession. Much of the rumination focuses on two matters: first, Yuri Slezkine's controversial new book, The Jewish Century; second, the problem of solopsism and the canonical American Jewish novel."

Here are submissions concerning topics about which I know nothing. About the first submission, Connections, the author writes, "I contemplate buying a set of tefillin for my thirtieth birthday, spin out reasons why I really want them, and wrestle with the question of whether I should have a daily davvening practice before I invest.".

About the second article, First impressions, the author says that in is one "In which I davven with tefillin for the first time, and describe what the experience feels like for me."

Still about topics with which I am unfamiliar, the site, On the Fringe--Al Tzitzit ran an article entitled, "Nothing to help us pray: Women and the Sh’ma—davvenning in the abstract", with the following description "What’s a woman supposed to do when the Sh’ma says, in no uncertain terms, to bind HaShem’s words on your hand and between your eyes? And when the Sh’ma says that you will see the fringe and remember all HaShem’s mitzot, what’s a woman supposed to look at?" A blogger tries to discern whether there's any halachic reason why Jewish women should be condemned to pray in the abstract just because they're female."

And finally, in this category, an article entitled "The Light of the Menorah": "Thoughts on the Menorah and human wisdom, which were bouncing around while I was studying the Torah reading for the week."
