Justice Delayed again in Bangladesh for Choudhury, by Dr Richard Benkin

Despite our meetings earlier this month, Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury was again denied justice through the Bangladeshi court system.

On April 18, 2005, Choudhury's attorney, Barrister Shafiq Ahmed motioned Bangladesh's High Court to implement Rule issued on March 28th; specifically, that the court had ordered the government to show cause why Choudhury should not be granted bail. The government had until April 6. Ahmed noted before Justices Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Muhammad Imdadul Haque Azad that the government has not provided a response to that order.

Justice Khadem responded, "Is it the Israeli connection?" Ahmed answered, "Yes, your honor."

According to sources in the court, Justice Chowdhury seemed to express displeasure at that and suggested that he preferred that this be heard by "any other bench."

Ahmed noted the difficulty with with today's hearing was obtained and that starting anew with another court would only add more time to the excessive jail time for this journalist, already imprisoned for 17 month.

The court then set May 7th RULE HEARING--at least another month.

All friends of Salah Uddin Choudhury and of human rights are urged to contact their governments, as well as representatives of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, requesting action so that this human rights travesty is ended, and that in the interim, Salah Uddin Choudhury is given the medical care he so badly needs and which was ordered by Bangladesh's own courts.
