Ariel Sharon's Folly

Ariel Sharon's Folly

Daniel Pipes disects Ariel Sharon's plan to forcibly remove Israeli citizens from their homes:

With the passage last week of a budget bill in Israel, the government of Ariel Sharon appears to be ready to remove more than 8,000 Israelis living in Gaza with force, if necessary.

In addition to the legal dubiousness of this step and its historical unprecedented nature (challenge to the reader: name another democracy that has forcibly removed thousands its own citizens from their lawful homes), the planned withdrawal of all Israeli installations from Gaza amounts to an act of monumental political folly. ...

Just addressing the challenge to readers component. Later, will read article.

United States of America;

Dawes Act of 1887 gave citizenship to Indians who abandoned tribal affiliations. (In 1924 all Indians were citizens). There were over 2,000 who took US citizenship. Many were forced from their homes if there was interferrence with railroad routes and right of ways, mining operations, etc. Examples are too numerous to list. See Homestead Act of 1862 and Burk Act of 1906.

The Fredmens Bureau Act of 3 March 1865 created in the War Department a "Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands" (This is a favorite of mine.). Both abandoned and confiscated lands were leased to Freedmen. More than 2,000 US citizens were forced from their lawful homes. Of course, the Freedmen got screwed also.

During WWII, Executive Order 9066 (I believe correct number)required certain US citizens to relocate from certain areas to other areas. Homes and businesses were sold for pennies on the dollar. It was a forced relocation.

There are other examples also. A little investigative work with the Erie Canal, Alaska, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands might prove interesting. Before the paper shreader was invented there was fire. Lake Eric waterfront property reminds me when I once worked in Hungary. There were beautiful boats on Lake Balaton - in this formerly Communist nation.

(Darn it, Andrew, you generated this post. We're not supposed to discuss the above with Canadians, Israelis, Dutch, Swiss, Irish, and other IsraPundit participants.)
