Israel to build 5 chemical plants in India

An Israeli defense firm has won a US$140 million ( 108 million) contract to build five plants to produce explosives in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Israeli Military Industries beat bids from European and US companies to secure the deal - the third major defense contract that Tel Aviv and New Delhi have signed in recent weeks, The Asian Age newspaper said.

IMI will supervise two subcontractors - Israel's Bateman Engineering and India's Nicco Corporation - to build the plants in two years.

India has recently agreed to supply US$12 million ( 9.2 million) worth of advanced tank shells to Israel, while IMI earlier this month won US$40 million ( 30.9 million) contract to upgrade rockets for the Indian army.

The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992 and Tel Aviv has emerged as an important arms supplier to India.

In a separate story, JPost reports:

Turkish minister visits IAI

Turkish Defense Minister Mehmet Vecdi Gonul got a first-hand look Thursday at the Israeli-made LORA ground-to-ground missile during his visit at Israel Aircraft Industries. Turkey has recently signed a $200-million deal to purchase a network of Heron unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) made by IAI.

The visiting Turkish defense minister was briefed on a variety of weapons systems, including the solid-fuel LORA missile developed by the MLM division of Israel Aircraft Industries. IAI revealed Thursday that the missile has a range of between 30 and 200 kilometers and can carry a warhead of 440 kgs. to 600 kgs. According to a statement, four such missiles mounted on a mobile launcher can be ready to fire in just 10 seconds.

IAI is seeking to attract a foreign partner for joint development of the LORA, which it hopes to sell to both international buyers and the IDF.

IAI President, Moshe Keret, also briefed Gonul on a variety of products for possible sale, including mini UAVs and the new Guardium unmanned patrol vehicle.

IAI has in the past sold Turkey Harpy killer drones. The Turkish Defense Minister praised the IAI for the successful completion of the $700-million upgrade of Turkey's fleet of F-4 fighter jets.

Such a tiny country - such a huge talent!
