Rightly so. They are responsible for some of the most reprehensible, violent attacks imaginable on innocent people, and they are committed heart and soul to annihilating Israel. Furthermore, they are utterly convinced that they are doing God's work.
Some, especially in the EU, have argued that talking to Hamas could help curb its extremist tendencies.
I apologize in advance to our European friends who get it, but to the rest I must say: You are ignorant, foolhardy, and unconscionable.
The überleftist feel-good bromide of yeah, well they have a political wing that does important social work has long grown stale and meaningless. The KKK has a political wing. La Cosa Nostra, Sinn Fein, and any number of other "political" front groups utilize the pretense of being a detached entity as a device to win merit and respectability for the base and injurious organizations they represent. This does not detract from the violent, criminal actions of those organizations with which they share a name and cause, and in the end it is only a shrewd ploy to advance such causes.
Should we deal with a political wing of al-Qaeda? Or how about a lobbying group which seeks to further the interests of pedophiles? If the U.S. government had a loosely affiliated military wing which wantonly murdered and destroyed in God's name, would it still be okay to acknowledge the political and moral standing of America?
Dealing with terrorists, thugs, and other criminal groups confers upon them a legitimacy they do not deserve, and provides them with a complimentary license to continue and escalate their depraved activity.
