Good news, but it comes from the New Jayson Blair Times
Has Bush changed his policy regarding Hamas?
Any number of articles state "yes" - see, for example, the recent piece at Jerusalem NewsWire.
Today [2005_06_07], however, The New Jayson Blair Times reports an entirely different story, as quoted below. Before one feels relief, one should bear in mind these factors: (i) the info is attributed to "a senior administration official" - well, that can be anyone, or someone who wishes to float a trial balloon; (ii) the US administration may be of two minds, harbouring two factions - which happens all too often; (iii) in my books, the NYT has a reputation of absolute unreliability, which is why I refer to it as the New Jayson Blair Times. Indeed, who knows which neo-Jayson Blair invented this piece.
NYT reports:
U.S. to Shun Hamas Members, Even if Democratically Elected
The Bush administration, rebuffing the suggestions of some European officials, will continue to refuse to have contact with the militant group Hamas and its leaders even if some of those leaders win elections in Palestinian areas, a senior administration official said Monday.
The official said that a ban on contacts with Hamas was required because the group was listed by the United States as a terrorist organization, and that the United States would not follow a practice of some European countries of engaging with the group's political wing even if it also had an armed wing carrying out attacks on civilians.

The first advice a politician gets from a "senior administration official" will always be to keep the back door open, - just in case. The US also shunned the PLO while simultaneously conducting secret negotiations with their envoys.
