You Can't Say That

You Can't Say That

Speaking of Pope Benedict's oversight, Jack Fowler of NRO responds to a (if not presumably, then at least potentially) Jewish emailer who criticized the Pope. His answer is, shall we say, less than carefully considered:

Must say the Jonah e-mailer’s line about Pope Benedict - "ALSO: as a German - who briefly served in the Nazxi armed forces (albeit under duress - or so he claims)" - is a humdinger. "Or so he claims" - implying, of course, that Benedict may very well have been a Nazi. Or was that a Nazxi? It’s definitely nauseating. Or nazxiating. What filth.
Let's see. Where have we seen Jews and their non-Jewish allies referred to as "filth" before. Could it be the Nazis:
The Jews were frequently referred to in "Mein Kampf" and Hitler had made plain his hated for them. References to the "filthy Jew" litter the book. In one section, Hitler wrote about how the Jews planned to "contaminate" the blood of pure Germans.
Don't bring up Goodwin's Law. I’m not calling Fowler a Nazi by any stretch of the imagination. A careless, somewhat hysterical zealot who too easily falls back into the Church's old habit of castigating the "perfidious Jews", sure. But not a Nazi. As far as the paranoid hysterics go, he's in good company:

A Vatican friend offers a defense:... There was not intentional act to leave Israel out. The Israeli reaction was, let us say, somewhat extreme. Face it, they called the new Pope an anti-semite. Why? Because the same day they broke off negotiations - again - with the Holy See over the economic treaty which should have been finished years ago. They do not want to waive tax liability and give the Church access to the courts for property and other disputes (which are now handled administratively), but they had promised to do just that in previous agreements with the Holy See.
Just to be clear: the Vatican's response to "you left Israel off the list of terrorism victims" is "the Jews are just pretending to be offended so that they can make more money off of Catholics."

UPDATE: Also, I want to be clear that this is not to attack either NRO or Catholicism. K-Lo's positions on Israel are virtually unimpeachable, and of course I've written many times about Pope Benedict's respect for Jews and for the Jewish State.
