Hamas and Abbas Agree: Violence is Good

Of course you'd expect Hamas to say that:

Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal declared on Wednesday that the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank marked the beginning of the end of the Zionist dream in Palestine... He dubbed the pullout a "defeat in the face of Palestinian resistance and a significant step with historic dimensions."... "We will continue the struggle until we liberate all our lands. This is an important day for the Palestinians and proof that the armed struggle has born fruit."

Yes - the armed struggle has indeed demonstrated much. It conclusively proved that the Palestinians can perpetuate any horror on Israel and the international community will still support them - a fact not lost on Israeli leaders, one hopes. Meanwhile, Abbas is taking a stand. Unfortunately, that stand happens to be in favor of terrorists and suicide bombers:

In his Friday speech, however, Abbas praised the "martyrs and their patience" for Israel's withdrawal... The Palestinian leader also promised that 5 percent of government jobs would go to the handicapped, many of whom were wounded in fighting with Israel.
That's fine - placed alongside his other promises to defeat Hamas and turn Gaza into a flourishing metropolis, there's really no reason to listen to anything he says. Hamas's crowing is not unexpected - but you notice they've been a touch wary of launching rockets in the last couple of weeks. That won't last of course - they'll go back to murdering Israelis as soon as they can. But the first post-disengagement attack will be a litmus test for Sharon and the IDF - and we can't imagine many people are betting they'll let it go unanswered.
