Same old, same old

Same old, same old

By Ted Belman

In a recent interview, widely reported, President Bush said,

Oh, absolutely, I understand. And I can understand why people think this decision is one that will create a vacuum into which terrorism will flow. I happen to disagree. I think this will create an opportunity for democracy to emerge. And democracies are peaceful. And, therefore, it's very important for the United States, as an active participant in this process, to encourage the formation of security forces that will defeat terror, just like the road map calls for -- these are Palestinian security forces -- and to encourage the Palestinians to develop a peaceful state.

Note the language that I have made bold. In essence he is saying that disengagement won't bring terror in its wake because it represents an "opportunity" for democracy to emerge. As if there weren't a million such opportunities in the last 50 years.

And to give you a greater sense of comfort he adds that the US will "ENCOURAGE" the formation of security forces and the developement of a peaceful state. Hohum.

At the same time, Abbas is adament that Hamas won't be disarmed let alone disbanded.

This is the litmus test. Will the US turn Gaza into a peaceful democracy? Its their baby now. Don't hold your breath.
