Israel was both a military threat to Cairo and also an economic threat. Since Cairo could not develop a more powerful military, they attacked Israel at its weak link, its faith.

Whoever Cynthia Johnson is, she is impervious to the Middle East. Elections will not have a moderating influence on militant groups by definition.
