More reaction; I also think the Ma'aleh Adumin freeze is part of a grand plan. The Sharon plan is superb for 19th century European colonial powers seeking to expand empires. Writing that the plan is based on demographics establishes a precedent that is very dangerous. There are blocs of Israel's Jewish citizens who believe places like Hebron to be Judaism's second holiest site. This belief is not a function of demographics. By extension, the Jewish cemeteries in the eastern sections of Jerusalem are considered sacred places by blocs of Israel's Jewish citizens. The reverence is not related to the ability to eliminate terrorism in the area because of the proximity to barbarians. In pragmatic terms, and for the purpose of this post only designating the PA a non-terrorist organization, the PA cannot disarm the terrorists because the terrorists are more powerful than the PA. If President Bush has not agreed or disagreed as to the status of Jerusalem; -how can PM Sharon be categorical other than in dealing with local domestic consumption of his comments? Jerusalem is already divided. Look at Ramallah and Abu Dis. A few months ago, there was a post here about the Hebrew University transferring land to the Arabs. I doubt the HU officials are in prison now. If a US citizen transferred land to North Korea, there would be dire consequences. I am guessing Israel is to function as a condominium with Jerusalem functioning as both an international city and also with condominium status for both Israel and Palestine. I am also guessing Palestine will not be sovereign within the usual import of the word. Foreign affairs, international military affairs, treasury and monetary matters will be provided by Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Where is Rachel's Tomb? If additional places like Bethlehem are assigned no reverence to Judaism and Christianity, the generated question is why have a government at all? Why remain in the area. Over the years Jews have been offered territory in Uganda, Vietnam, Alaska... even Stalin's Jewish Autonomous Region. GOI is not Jewish and even worse, those Jews in Israel cannot participate in the decisions they consider fundamental to their existence. Had the religious Jews and Jews with an identity to a Jewish heritage, participated in the political issues, directly or indirectly, and lost, it would be a different story. So far, nothing has been resolved other than the rehabilitation of the Pale of Settlement. Kol tuv, Posted by: BobW on September 4, 2005 11:25 AM Post a comment |
War or Peace
By Ted Belman (I posted this again hoping to get more reaction to my postulations.)
Israel has agreed to freeze settlement construction in Ma'aleh Adumin. This was either as a result of unbearable pressure or was in accordance with a grand Plan. I think the latter.
What follows is my articles dealing with such a plan
This plan is based on separation along demographic lines. Such lines as are presently contemplated by Sharon leave 10% of Judea and Samaria in Israel's hands. This is much more then Barak proposed at Camp David. Such a plan gives Israel more then the left would give and less then the right wants.I believe that it also assumed that the PA would honour its commitments to disarm the terrorists and stop incitement. I believe that a failure to do so, has been included in the Plan. In such an event, Israel will remain in control of area "C" which is about 30% of Judea and Samaria.
Sharon has been categorical during the last two years that Jerusalem would remain undivided and Israel's capital and that Ma'aleh Adumin would be enlarged and part of Israel. This doesn't mean that Bush has agreed but it does mean that Bush has not disagreed. Timing is everything. It does not serve the Plan to wave this red flag at the Palestinian bull at this time while attempting to get incremental steps from them.
Furthermore, no provocation will be tolerated while the position of tne US in Iraq is as precarious as it is.
Bush will contrate on stabilizing Iraq and Gaza for the duration of his term. During this time we will see to what extend the Plan has a chance of succeeding. If not there will be war. Perhaps at the same time as war comes to Iran.
