Arab world's silence is deafeningTrackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: Comments
Of course the Arab world was silent. Even if Ahmadinejad didn't preach to eliminate Israel from the planet, it was still an anti-Zionism conference. Mentioning the danger of a nuclear Iran deflects from facing the current dangers, the Mullahs are funding Hezbullah throughtout the world and they are leveraging their oil pool to hurt the Atlantic Alliance. All that "condemnation" from Western governments was toned down to acknowledge Iran and PR China signed the largest contract in history not involving pork bellies or plywood. It wasn't missed here that the editorial praises a Palestinian [sic] official giving a PA imprimature to Israel's right to exist. This is a pre-existing right going back to 1948. To challenge this right is inherently a challenge to the legitimacy of the United Nations. We are using Emperor Haile Salassie's horse cavalry to counter attack Mussolini's aeroplanes with machine guns. It won't work. The editorial was really anti-Israel. Time to fight fire with fire or fire with water or, if we're advanced enough, with fire retardant chemicals - but not horse cavalry. 1948 was a long time ago. Arabs and Moslems talk a good game, but rarely act upon their words. They appear to lie so often that even their statements appear to have little meaning. The common or poor people in these lands including Iran know what is going on in their own countries. Posted by: georg von mecklenburg on October 30, 2005 08:00 AM
What did you expect? Bob W - where did you get the idea that the editorial was anti-Israel from? I must be missing something here. Posted by: Ilana Rosen on October 30, 2005 01:20 PM
Shalom Ilana, The editorial was prepared to flavor the PA as political moderates. Buried at the bottom is an unattributed PA official concession that Israel has a "right to exist". This right was established by the UN in 1948. The reader is therefore mentally obliged to calibrate the bulk of the editorial re Iran's death threats with a PA point contrary to Iran's. Note that the editors didn't say they write from occupied Spanish territory. Kol tuv, Posted by: BobW on October 30, 2005 01:42 PM Post a comment |
Arab world's silence is deafening
St. Petersburg Times editorial:
Since coming to office in July, Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who campaigned on a platform of addressing the country's intractable corruption and unemployment, has been trying to change the subject. He did so in dramatic fashion at an anti-Zionism conference where Ahmadinejad declared that Israel should be "wiped off the map."
