U.S offers beleaguered Assad deal to end political isolation

By Yoav Stern, Aluf Benn and Amos Harel, Haaretz

The U.S government has made an offer to Syria's president Bashar Assad that will end his political isolation in return for 'painful concessions', the London Times newspaper reported Saturday.

According to the terms of the deal, Syria is required to name --and possibly hand over- those involved in the slaying of Lebanon's former prime minister, Rafik al-Hariri; stop its interfering in Lebanon, where a number of Syria's critics have been recently killed in a series of mysterious bombings, and cease its support of militant groups such as Hezobollah, Hamas and the Iraqi insurgents.

In return, the U.S promises to establish friendly diplomatic ties with Damascus and allow foreign aid and investment into the near bankrupt economy, helping to ensure the struggling regime's survival.[...]

(My guess is that the Golan has also been included to sweeten the deal See Syria is Coming to a Boil posted October 7th)

America offers 'Gaddafi deal' to bring Syria in from the cold Timesonline has more details but is unsure Syria will accept.

I believe "painful concessions" is a copyrighted term owned by GOI.

Of course the Golan is to be traded off. Over the summer we had about 3-4 articles posted here with hints by GOI officials that the Golan Heights was subject to forfeiture. I clearly remember writing that the Golen "Heights" traverses all the way south to Hamat Gader, southeast of the Kinneret.

After the Iraq Constitution vote today, Count Folke Bernadotte plans to leave his grave to attend a gala celebration. In only weeks from now, Israel will be 2 triangles of land
with no contiguity.

I also expect to learn that Jerusalem is to be given international status.
