Shalom Patrick, This post should be annotated with the recent joke posted here by the British Muslim female comedian explaining why some Muslim virgin desperately wanted to change her status. Forgot who posted it and the comedian's name but it's definitely related to this conference in Spain. Kol tuv, Posted by: BobW on October 28, 2005 05:40 PM
If the Quran is the inerrant word of the all knowing un-changing all mighty God then it should be taken literally. The fact that it cannot be taken litterally due to it's rediculous statements and faulty claims prooves the invalidity of the Muslim faith. Liberal Muslims acknowledge it isn't perfect and conform it into a changing world. That's why there are so many fundamentalist Muslims running around blowing each other up. Because for them to conform would be acknowledging their God isn't all knowing, that "his word" needs to be changed to fit the times. These Muslim women should forsake such a hypocritical faith. If the Quran is true then their god is wicked and unfair, if it's false and changes with the times their god is incompetant! Posted by: Duh... on October 29, 2005 10:49 PM Post a comment |
If Only Islam Would Listen to Its Women
A consortium of women from the Islamic world are callling for a "gender jihad" to promote equality and rights for the other half of Islam's population. I wish them all the best, but their primary obstruction in such an endeavor is the immovable literalism that Islam has been beset with since its inception.
Here's the thing: Of course it's possible—if a society is willing to separate church (or mosque) and state. Even if these cool ladies can manage to effect some sort of reform by which they can bypass the patently misogynistic tenets of the still literally interpreted Quran, until the totalitarian theocracy which Islam aspires to is eradicated, they will continue to run into the well-fortified wall of orthodoxy.
Enlightened and freedom-minded Westerners will continue to hold anti-Islamic views until such a time that a sizeable amount of Muslims can decisively say that the Quran is not necessarily the inerrant and immutable word of God. Sadly, I see little hope for the chances of this happening. Not in my lifetime, at least. At the core of the Islamic faith is the belief that the Quran is God's perfect, uncreated word as revealed to Muhammad.
