All Over but the Pullback

All Over but the Pullback

Nixon Did It in Vietnam. Bush Will Do It in Iraq

By Jonathan Rauch, Washington Post

(You've heard of "mission creep", this is "mission retreat". I always believed that the US invaded Iraq in order to transform the ME and not because of WMD and certainly not to bring democracy to Iraq. As the mission got tougher and tougher, the mission kept retreating until now the mission is, bring the boys home sooner rather then later.

The war was a direct result of 9/11 but it was compromised on 9/11 when Bush let the Saudis out of the country. It was further comprimised when Bush refused to name the enemy and called it a "war on terror". It was further compromised by political correctness and calling Islam a religion of peace. There is no way the US could win in Iraq without taking on Syria and then Iran. Similarly there is no way the war against Israel will end unless they are taken on. Ted Belman)

[..]President Bush may not know it yet -- or, then again, he may -- but in Iraq he is about to do a Nixon. Psychologically and politically, the withdrawal phase has already begun. Militarily, the pullback will start within weeks, or at most months, of the Dec. 15 Iraqi parliamentary elections.

How can I be sure? I'm not, and I have no inside information. But the evolving structure of public opinion about Iraq is making the current war effort there unsustainable. MORE
