Crystals are forever?

Crystals are forever?

Crossing the Rubicon excerpts some choice words about the craven attempt by the International Committee of the Red Cross to allow the Magen David to be an internationally recognized symbol allowing its wearer to be protected as a non-combatant.

Talk about joining a club that would have you as a member. Israel seems happy to join a club that won't have it as a member - at least not an equal one. And to have to submit to the approval of the Palestinian Red Crescent society that regularly flouts its status by aiding terrorists is beyond belief. And if that was enough:

the term was changed to "crystal" because the South Africans objected to the diamond on the grounds that to them, it connoted slavery
.

So the upshot is that the only country whose sensibilities don't matter is Israel's. It reminds of a cartoon after the PLO terror attack on the Achille Lauro. While the terrorists were en-route to Egypt, American planes intercepted them. This led to an international incident that inspired a devastating cartoon by Jack Ohman of the Oregonian. (I can relate the gist of it.) Pictured are three men with captions, Mr. Mubarak demands an apology; Mr. Arafat demands an apology; Mr. Craxi demands and apology. In the final panel is a wheelchair draped with an American flag and the caption: Mr. Klinghoffer has no demands.

There was a murder committed but the world's outrage was directed against the United States for taking action against the vile murderers. Not much has changed in 20 years.

Finally, the question is whether this protection would even help Israel. Perhaps when Israel sends its representatives around the world for its participation in many humanitarian efforts - a disproportionate number given its size. But in it's war against the Muslim world don't expect the red symbol to offer any protection; and when the protected status is violated don't expect any outrage.

No one protested the killing of Yochai Porat and no one protested the killing of Shmuel Akiva Weiss both of whom were shot down as they went to tend others who were wounded. Don't expect the red crystal to make any difference in the future either.

More appropriate outrage from Boker Tov Boulder. Treppenwitz is waiting for antisemites to start claiming that the symbol:

is actually a not-so-subtle reference to the money-grubbing Jewish diamond merchants... or perhaps Passover matzoh made with gentile blood.

I wonder if a proposed hammer and sickle would have saved many hours attending useless meetings.

Jewish destiny is not in Jewish hands.
