December 10: 215th anniversary of the storm of Ismail

by Bill Levinson

Saturday will be the 215th anniversary of yet another complete humiliation of Islamofascism by a European army. On 10 December 1790, Aleksandr V. Suvorov took the fortress of Ismail by assault despite the fortress' supposed invincibility and the numerical superiority of the Islamofascists inside it. The result was an overwhelming victory (although the Russians suffered close to 33 percent casualties themselves).

"The Turkish losses were 26 thousand killed and 9 thousand wounded men, the Russian losses were 1815 killed and 2445 wounded men and the biggest losses were among officers because commanders went in front of the assault columns. The winners captured 265 guns (large-caliber in main), 42 river boats, 345 colours and bunchuks (Turkish standards)."

George Gordon, Lord Byron's Don Juan reports, however, that the Turkish garrison was wiped out almost to the last man (because the Janissaries would not surrender).

But let me put an end unto my theme:
There was an end of Ismail -- hapless town!
Far flash'd her burning towers o'er Danube's stream,
And redly ran his blushing waters down.
The horrid war-whoop and the shriller scream
Rose still; but fainter were the thunders grown:
Of forty thousand who had mann'd the wall,
Some hundreds breathed -- the rest were silent all!

Suwarrow now was conqueror -- a match
For Timour or for Zinghis in his trade. [1]
While mosques and streets, beneath his eyes, like thatch
Blazed, and the cannon's roar was scarce allay'd,
With bloody hands he wrote his first despatch;
And here exactly follows what he said: --
"Glory to God and to the Empress!" (Powers [2]
Eternal! such names mingled!) "Ismail's ours."
-George Gordon, Lord Byron, Don Juan, 8th Canto

[1] Tamerlane and Genghis Khan
[2] Empress = Catherine the Great

Suvorov knew what to do with Islamofascists. Now we need people in the United States, Israel, Russia, India, and Europe who will do the same.
