Grassroots Movement Forms To Unite All Religious Parties

A grassroots movement has sprung up to unite all the Israeli religious parties. The group has received the blessing of former chief rabbi of Israel Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu. ”The situation demands that we all unite. If we unite we can be the majority!” he said recently.

Organizers note that today the religious parties have 30 mandates or a quarter of the Knesset. - Shas 11, Ihud Haleumi 9, Mafdal 4, Agudat Yisrael 3, Degel Hatorah 2, David Tal 1. It's believed that a united party could expand its to over 40 seats making it the largest in the Knesset. Organizers note that with passing of the direct vote for the PM it is the largest Knesset paposition rty which wins the right to form the government. Supporters of the idea want a poll to be held to determine what would be the strength of such a party in an election.

A recent flyer distributed by the group explains their position.

In light of recent events, whereby the Ariel Sharon destroyed entire communities and expelled thousands of Jews from their homes. And with the understanding that this is only the beginning - we must make courageous move in our coming path.

We the Jews of the Land of Israel, believers in the Torah of Israel need a united Jewish leadership led by the spirit of the Torah.

We therefore demand that our spiritual and political leaders unite into one big party by the Torah. Together we can better fight against the attempts to harm Jewish interests in our land.

We know this is not an easy task, and it will demand sacrifices of all the parties involved but the need is critical in light of the current situation.

It's unbelievable how in the wake of the looming threat to Israel both physicly and spiritualy by Abu Sharon, that the religious and right-wing can't unite. It reminds me of the Warsaw Ghetto in which the different religious factions refused to unite even under the threat of imminent demise. The path is quite clear and there are only two options. If they don't unite then Sharon will inevitably win re-election which will lead to the expulsion from half of Israel along with the third and final intifada. This will also be an era in which Sharon and his Nazi thugs continue to drag woman and children from their houses in middle of the night and throw them in jail during his political persacutions and brutalaties. Furthermore, he would lead a pogrom against anything religious along with his former Shinui party members. So let's put aside personal ambitions and unite.
