Netanyahu to shift Likud rightwardTrackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: Comments
Worthless as the paper they are written on. Mr. Landau should know better. The only one assured to do everything in its power to abide by such demands is Moshe Feiglin's Manhigut Yehudit (Jewish Leadership) faction within the Likud. There's a sucker born every minute. I don't think so. Credibility is such a big issue in a contest between Sharon and Netanyahu, I believe that Likud will find a way to guarantee Isralis that they will follow through on their platform. I am expecting the equal to the Republicans "contract with America" of some years past. Posted by: Ted Belman on December 8, 2005 10:07 AM
Ted: I would rewrite that sentence to say that credibility is NOT such a big issue with Sharon and Netanyahu rather ideology is. In essense both have gone back on their word before - Sharon with surrender in Gaza and Netanyahu with Hevron. Anyone voting for either of these two must know that there is a risk that either will not follow their election platform, but rather that each possesses the core ideology to meet the challenges. On the one hand, as an American I support BiBi because I think there is no better spokesman for Israel alive than he. I do believe despite some John Kerry like pretzel-positions (and a half-assed attempt to thwart disengagement) warts and all he is the best for Israel. He is tougher on the Arabs and Europeans than Sharon, and although he gave into American pressure in the past, I hope he could have at least learned his lesson. Feiglin is a fringe candidate, but could be an important minister as Manigot Yehudit is the morality of the party and only through its presence can the crucial element of Judaism and Religious Zionism be reinjected in Israeli life. In 1997, shortly after Tony Blair came to power, he met with Netanyahu in London. Blair's objective was nothing less than to railroad Bibi into making concessions to Arafat to put the "peace process" back on track. I will never forget the look of stark panic on Blair's face when the two men broke from their meeting to face the press for questions. Despite his foibles (and there are many), Netanyahu is the only Israeli leader that can face down those who wish to see the Jewish state thrown to the wolves. Netanyahu to shift Likud rightward
By GIL HOFFMAN, JPOST
Former prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that he had agreed to take several steps to take the Likud rightward if elected in the December 19 party leadership race.
In return for MK Uzi Landau's endorsement, Netanyahu agreed to a "document of principles" that would differentiate the Likud from Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Kadima party. Netanyahu and Landau outlined the document on Wednesday in a press conference at Tel Aviv's Beit Sokolov.
The document calls for strengthening West Bank settlements and holding referenda on future territorial concessions.
It also rules out unilateral withdrawals and negotiations with the Palestinians before they eliminate terror, violence and incitement.
Netanyahu caved into Landau's demand to forbid concessions in the Golan Heights but he did not accept his request to call for the annexation of settlement blocs in Judea and Samaria.
