Internationalization of Jerusalem

Internationalization of Jerusalem

According to a very recent poll, Israel is divided on whether to divide Jerusalem to achieve peace. Of course this poll didn't go into the question of how this might be accomplished from a security point of view.

So Why is Peres saying Jerusalem will remain unified. Actually he said Jerusalem will remain undivided and "open and accessible for all nations"

In other words Peres is in favour of Jerusalem being internationalized.

This is not surprising, the Saudi Peace Plan calls for the same thing as does the Partition Plan of '47.

The Roadmap provies for

"a negotiated resolution on the status of Jerusalem that takes into account the political and religious concerns of both sides, and protects the religious interests of Jews, Christians, and Muslims worldwide, and fulfills the vision of two states, Israel and sovereign, independent, democratic and viable Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security."
Need I say more.

"...takes into account the political and religious concerns of both sides..." even as the Waqf seeks to de-Judaize the Temple Mount, and the Islamic world invents stories that Jews have no rights to the most sacred area in Israel.

Jerusalem is non-negotiable.It remains the eternal capital of Israel with 80% of the cities population being Jewish. Israel safeguards and preserves religious sites of all faiths present there unlike the period 1948-67 when the Old City was under Jordanian rule and all the synagogues were destroyed (like in Gaza) and the Jews were forbidden access to the Western Wall that was used by the Jordanians as stables and urinals.Any proposals to internationalise the City really pre-date the establishment of the modern State of Israel and are detached from reality. At the same time its important to recognize that the Arab suburbs in East Jerusalem have been a conduit for suicide bombers enabling them to enter the west of the city and wreak havoc and slaughter their jewish neighbours and place half the city into a State of siege. The city remains de facto divided in a similar way to Muslim West Beirute and Christian East Beirute due to the divisions that exist between the different populations.

It is this reality that is apparent to any visitor to the City that leads me to concede that albeit internationalization is inconceivable - Arab East Jerusalem (excluding the Old City) may well have to be separated by a security barrier and granted limited autonomy, but never form part of another sovereign State.

Peres always will remain a loose cannon and pose a danger to Israel as a consequence of his oversized ego and his desire in the same way as Barak to commit the nation without any consultation to scenarios with far reaching consequences. I believe it was he who signed the Gaza/West Bank Link agreement without proper consideration for its real consequences. A situation where he ends up as Prime Minister should Sharon die in office would I believe have serious consequences for Israel's security, since I consider Peres to be a "have been" who's judgement is seriously flawed.
