Say "No" to the Red Cross

Hiding behind a crystal

JPOST Editorial

On Thursday, the 192 signatories of the Geneva Conventions decided to adopt a new international symbol - the Red Crystal - alongside the Red Cross and the Red Crescent. Now it seems, for the first time, Israel's Magen David Adom (MDA) can join the 182 members of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Crystal no 4.gif

The vote "reflects Israel's improved international standing … This is yet another achievement for Israel's diplomacy," gushed Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom. MDA itself worked hard to achieve this result, which paves the way for Israel to join international rescue missions.

The new Red Crystal is a simple, bold diamond shape - called a "crystal" at the request of South Africa, since "diamond" had connotations of slavery. MDA will continue to use its current symbol, the red Star of David, in Israel, and internationally can use either an empty crystal or one with a Star of David inside it.

MDA and Israeli diplomats have been working toward such a solution for years, though it clearly does not give the symbol of the Jewish people the same status as the cross and the crescent. Those other two symbols do not have to appear within the crystal when operating internationally; the Star of David will.

Advocates of the crystal point out that the International Committee of the Red Cross was actually looking for such a symbol, even leaving aside the "problem" of Israel's membership, since the Red Cross was having trouble operating in some Muslim countries under its own symbol. Presumably, therefore, MDA will not be the only member society operating under the crystal in some hot spots; so will the Red Cross.

Despite these pragmatic considerations, we cannot help but feel deeply offended by both this international verdict and our own nation's puzzlingly obsequious embrace of it. Why could there not have been four recognized symbols: a cross, crescent, crystal and the Star of David? Or alternatively, why were the cross and crescent not - like our star will be - forced inside the crystal when operating internationally? There are no good answers to these questions. Evidently even a humanitarian movement, and one which perhaps more than any international body purportedly prides itself on neutrality and impartiality, can baldly discriminate against the Jewish state for decades, and then adopt a "solution" that continues to discriminate against the symbol of the Jewish people.

There is, furthermore, a wider problem with the new arrangement: Rather than rejecting and combatting hatred, it accommodates violence and intolerance. It is no coincidence that, after over half a century of tolerating the rejection of the Star of David, the Red Cross has itself in recent years found it increasingly difficult to operate, and began to seek cover.

Though the crystal is being portrayed as the solution to a general problem, namely places where one symbol or another is not tolerated, in practice the intolerance flows almost entirely in one direction: from the Muslim world against the Star of David and, recently, against the Red Cross too. It is almost impossible to conceive of a situation in which a Christian country, by contrast, would take violent offense to a rescue mission operating under a Red Crescent.

By bowing for so long to the utter rejection of the symbol of the Jewish people, and then devising for it a second-class status, the international community legitimized a hatred that is the antithesis of the Red Cross mission and the cause of many of the casualties it treats.

Why should a Red Cross ambulance, whose only mission is to save lives, not be able to operate in Muslim areas? Why does Israel have to beg Muslim countries for the right to openly help their peoples recover from national disasters? Most perplexingly, how has this blinding intolerance become so "normal" that such questions are not even asked?

Thursday's decision on the new symbol was, in a step almost unheard on such issues, taken by a vote rather than by consensus. Over 20 Muslim countries, led by Syria, voted no. For these countries, even hiding Israel behind a crystal was plainly too much tolerance. And in the end, it was not just Israel that attempted to hide itself from a hatred in many Islamic countries so deep it extends even to those who would save their own peoples' lives. It was the entire West as well.

Red Star of David

After almost six decades of rejection, Israel saw the road cleared yesterday for its emergency and disaster relief organization to join the International Red Cross. The price of admission was relinquishing its symbol, the Red Star of David.

Instead, the Red Cross approved a new "neutral" symbol -- a Red Crystal, which Israel must adopt to become a member, possibly next spring. The Star of David may still be used at home, and on foreign missions it can be put inside the Crystal, provided the host country agrees.

Israeli diplomats are celebrating the Crystal as a great victory. If that's a victory, we'd hate to see a defeat. Even this compromise, which was opposed by most Muslim countries, came only after the American Red Cross withheld its contributions to protest Israel's exclusion from the international body.

Some Crystal backers argue that the Red Cross carries no religious symbolism. Under this rewriting of history, Swiss Red Cross founder Henry Dunant adopted the inverse design of his homeland's flag without any religious motivation. But the Swiss flag dates back to the Holy Roman Empire and of course has strong Christian connotations. This cannot have escaped the deeply religious Dunant who, by the way, was also a fervent Zionist.

Irrespective of Dunant's intentions, the Red Cross came to be seen as a Christian symbol. That's why Muslim countries refused to adopt it, and instead chose the Red Crescent, the only other recognized symbol. It's a disgrace that the Star of David, which symbolizes the faith that spawned both Christianity and Islam, is excluded.

The Wall Street Journal also has an editorial fuming with outrage over this insult to the Jewish people.

But even more wrath should be turned on the dhimmi-witted Israeli officials to bowed to this and submitted to this degradation.

And what will the MDA get out of this sell-out of national honor? Supposedly, the emblem warns that an ambulance or hospital or medical worker is under the protection of the International Red Cross. But the Arabs will never pay any attention to that anyway. When they are out to kill Jews, no emblem is going to get in their way.

Once when Syria had murdered a number of Israeli prisoners of war, a representative of the International Red Cross actually mentioned to the Syrian foreign minister that such an act was not in accord with the Geneva Convention, and the Syrian told him "The Geneva Convention does not apply to Jews."

There is no reason to suppose there is or will be any change in that attitude.

So the miserable wimps who sold out to the ICRC for nothing.

Though I too find it difficult to understand why Israel went along with this senseless icon, it is in fact an accomplished fact and Israel has decided in favor of it...the Just Say No post seems a Quixote-like tilting at windmills. Futire.

Why even start blaming Red Cross when it is the Judenrat Government of Israel that finds this bigotry and HUMILIATION OF ALL JEWS acceptable? Ok, I will never donate even a penny to Red Cross/crescent... whatever it is. But, again, it is the actions of, as it is mentioned above, "dhimmi-witted" Israeli governement that concern me the most.

Will the real leaders of Israel please stand up?

There is also a good chance of having a camera crew on hand to record your heroics!!

It is a done deal. We can complain all we want but it won't change the bigotry of the world and especially of NGO's filled with lefties.

I would recommend making the only statement the lefties seem to pay attention to.

BOYCOTT THE RED CROSS and all other left leaning organisations!!!!

If the enemy does not think the Geneva Convention applies to the prisoners he takes, it is hard to see why his own soldiers should expect to be treated differently if they are captured. However, allowing enemy soldiers to surrender saves one's own people because then the enemy will not fight to the death. A better reprisal than to kill Syrian prisoners would be to bomb (using explosives and napalm to cause as much harm as possible) downtown Damascus, even if collateral civilian losses occurred. Leaflets could then be dropped explaining to the Syrian people that this was the consequence of their government's decision to kill prisoners.

We all engage in wishful thinking. The reason why the above (a perfectly reasonable course of action) wasn't implemented is the same reason why the Red Croscent's open bigotry was accepted. It is the same reason why Israel doesn't even challenge the cynical lies of self-detonating arab-moslem savages who stole the Jews' palestinian identity and even Zionism itself (what is "palestinian" nationalism if not Zionism that standing on its head?), and whose self-proclaimed goal is nothing short of genocide. It's the same reason why Israel adamantly refuses to act in its own interests and is perfectly willing to uproot its own peaceful and productive citizens instead of fighting the jihadi murderers, giving them a victory on a plate.

In India, baby elephants are tied with a rope in order to prevent them from running around. When they grow up and become big, bad elephants they are still tied with a rope. A grown elephant could easily break that rope, but they usually don't. Similarly, it's the 2,000-year old victim mentality of the Jews that permeates all the reasoning behind our habitually irrational behavior and cowardly actions.

I sent in a letter of protest to the relevant authorities

28th November 2005

To whom it may concern

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to tell you how horrified I’ve been regarding the Red Cross’s discrimination against Israel’s Magen David Adom.

Firstly, Israel, as we know, is at the forefront of much of the medical technology and drug treatment that we have and benefit from around the world today. So how is it, that Israel’s Magen David Adom has to acquiesce to the age-old prejudice, and remove the Star of David symbol from their ambulances, replacing it with a Red Crystal instead, so as to gain recognition and conditional membership of the international Red Cross? Shouldn’t this Red Crystal symbol be used globally, replacing the Red Cross and Red Crescent, instead of just singling out Israel’s Magen David Adom for this treatment?

From an international viewpoint, the Red Crystal would also put the Magen David Adom ambulance crews at risk (if they are the only organisation using it), because the vehicles would be easy to single out as targets in any conflict outside Israel. This substantiates the argument that a global symbol (the Red Crystal) be adopted.

It has also come to my attention that it has now been demanded as a requirement of Israel’s Magen David Adom membership, that they must allow Red Crescent ambulances into Israel, without going through any security checks. The fact of the matter is that there is a mass of documentation and some film footage, giving ample evidence that Red Crescent ambulances have previously been used to transport weapons, homicide bombers and explosives.

This is a heinous demand which puts the lives of innocent people at risk!

Please re-think the excessive demands you have made on Israel’s Magen David Adom. If any Red Crescent ambulance were to transport homicide bombers, not only would innocent Israeli lives be taken, but also Palestinian lives would be lost when Israel retaliates. This could, if there were a great loss of life due to terrorism, cause another, unwanted war in the middle east.

I have always wondered why Israel’s Magen David Adom was not allowed membership of the international Red Cross, even though they do admirable work and are dedicated to saving lives. But with the most recent events coming to light, I now understand the reason, which, by the way, speaks volumes. While Israel must remove the Red Star of David, replacing it with an “international” Red Crystal, both the Red Cross and Red Crescent remain, which overtly shows extreme prejudice.

I know that the Red Cross is the flag of Switzerland, the same as many European countries which have crosses incorporated into their flags, because historically, the countries of Europe are all based on Christianity, and the Crescent is the symbol of Islam.

However, there seems to be no place for the Star of David.

I await your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Laura,

You don't seem to understand that a group that will deal with genocidal murderers does not have any morality to support.

The Red Cross KNOWS that the so-called Palestinians have used, or allowed the use of, their Ambulances for attacks on Israelis. I would also point out that all the non-monetary aid (including from USAID) simply allows the terrorists to have more cash available to buy weapons and support fighters with their only purpose to KILL JEWS.

It is not that difficult of an idea to comprehend. In the cold war the US fed the USSR allowing them to continue their brain dead policies for decades longer, creating more WMD to pollute the world, than would have happened without the wests aid.

If we allowed the same type of support to be sent to Cuba it would also have a rather large Military Hardware cache. As we have not been quite that stupid with them their ability to attack us even indirectly has been decreased.
