I simply argued whether the right was guaranteed by the constitution and that I believe just as people can't automatically drive a car without testing, licensing and registration and being a certain age, the same sort of standards should be required for guns, that's all.

Unfortunately, the laws you advocate such as requiring people to get licenses to own guns are too frequently used to prevent people from owning any weapons. Rapists are therefore free to prey on women in disarmed places like the United Kingdom, New York City, and Washington DC. It is 100 percent common sense that people SHOULD learn to use guns properly if they plan to own them but I don't trust the government with licensing and registration.

I can go along with requiring a license to carry a weapon outside one's home or place of business because the user's actions can affect innocent people. If the state MUST issue the license to anyone who is not disqualified from owning a firearm, I can go along with these laws. This is the case where I live.

If the state or municipality has discretion as to who can carry a firearm, I would not (as a juror) enforce the law against anyone who didn't comply, e.g. in New York City. New York City has no gun laws that anyone has any obligation to respect, not after the police refused to answer 911 calls while Al Sharpton's rioters were burning down a Jewish neighborhood. The same goes for Los Angeles, where the police refused to intervene in riots, and New Orleans, where many police deserted their posts. (In the Armed Forces, desertion is incidentally punishable by death or at least it was, at least if it happened "in the presence of the enemy." The police in question should be fired at the very least.)

This is a reasonable compromise. I also think strict background checks should be made before anyone is issued firearms. As I said previously, law-abiding citizens should have no objections to these minimal requirements.

I agree you have good arguments. I also believe that NO GOVERNMENT can be completely trusted to "slightly" infringe. If that were so, why bother with the 2nd amendment at all??

The fact is the 2nd amendment was directed MORE at the Individual needing to protect themselves from governments, including their own, than for self protection against the usual criminals, bandits...

Again, go back and read the arguments the founding fathers and others at the time put forward for and against this amendment. Sports, self protection, militia were all included, but, the biggie was their use to free themselves from the King!! The militia was LOCAL and could be used to protect against a government out of control!!

The good arguments you put forward will have little effect on the bad guys obtaining weapons. Anyone following what is happening in England right this minute will see that laws are ignored by criminals. Gun crime is a burdgeoning business there. Smugglers love the fact they can make more money running weapons on the blck market. Criminals love the fact that they have no one to worry about but the police.

I support removing the rights of FELONS and people who would appear to be unable to make rational decisions about using weapons (too young, mentally unfit). As mentioned above it has little effect outside of voting, but, it looks reasonable.

I guess the lessons of Prohibition and our current War On Drugs has taught few lessons on the behavior of people.
