Hamas goes too far

Hamas goes too far

From a New York Times editorial:

We appreciate the difficulty that a terrorist organization may have in establishing a broadcast outlet. The recent threats from the corrupt Fatah party against a reporter for Hezbollah's Al Manar TV station underscore that unfortunate circumstance.

However, we are exceeding uncomfortable with the efforts of Hamas, a Palestinian reformist terrorist organization, to establish a new television station so close to the elections later this month. If Hamas, a party that is vying for leadership in a future peaceful, democratic Palestinian government, has its own station, the temptation would be great to favor its own candidates at the expense of others competing in these free and fair elections. Taking unfair advantage of its ability to broadcast, Hamas could compromise the integrity of the upcoming elections and reduce the chances of a peaceful, democratic outcome.

It would also give fodder to those who are skeptical of Hamas's peaceful intentions. These skeptics pay too much attention to Hamas's accumulation of weapons and stated intetnt to destroy Israel. This is mere posturing; a crucial step in generating the popular support it needs to compete in, and, possibly, win these elections.

We call on the Palestinian Authority to issue clear guidelines to ensure that no party misuses the public airwaves to gain an unfair advantage in the historic Palestinian elections. We call on Hamas to abide by these guidelines to ensure a nice clean election from all parties involved and bring the promise of a peaceful, democratic Palestine closer to realization.

Well, no that wasn't a real NY Times editorial. This was, though.
