The Palestinians destroyed their own property (the greenhouses) and usable buildings (the synagogues) simply for the sake of destroying and not even for self-enrichment. In fact, the locusts to which I compared them enrich themselves when they destroy a field (by eating the grain or whatever). The Mongols and Huns were infamous for plundering, pillaging, and burning but the property they stole or destroyed belonged to their enemies; the greenhouses the Palestinians wrecked had been purchased for them as gifts by American philanthropists. I have several advanced degrees and a fairly wide vocabulary but I quite honestly don't know of a simple English word that describes irrational destruction on this scale.

The only one that comes to mind is "potlach," a ceremony in which someone demonstrates how wealthy he is by destroying his property. There was an example from Henryk Sienkiewicz's "The Deluge" in which a wealthy Pole had a pair of goblets (whose beauty Sienkiewicz described in such detail that it took half a page), and I knew what was coming; the Pole offered a toast and then smashed one of the goblets. It was disgusting and Sienkiewicz doubtlessly wrote it into the story to illustrate the problems with the ruling Polish nobility of the 17th century. What the Palestinians did was even more mindless and there is really no good word that describes it.

Now we come to the Palestinians' habit of routinely breaking truces, and the ISM's actions regarding Rachel Corrie. "Oath-breakers" describes the first and "betrayers" the second, but neither word really encompasses the outrage I was trying to convey. Hence my less-scientific "vermin" and "SOBs," each of which contains the basic concept in a single word or short phrase. They are, however, quite imprecise because they can mean so many other things.

In fact, the only single word I have ever seen that really describes the Palestinians' endless litany of broken peace agreements is out of an Orson Scott Card science fiction book. The humans were classifying alien races as either "raman" or "varelse." A "raman" was an alien with whom you could communicate, negotiate, and trade, and who could be your friend even though he differed from you physically. A "varelse" was something like a rabid dog, a dangerous entity with which effective communication and negotiation was impossible. The only way to deal with a "varelse" was to kill it. Plague bacteria and Card's fictional Descolada virus are examples of "varelse," and the behavior of the militant Palestinians-- their total unwillingness and inability to keep peace agreements and their ongoing litany of terroristic violence-- seems to place them in this category as well.
