khomeini re ignited the culture of the shaheed or suicide bomber based on early history of Islamic conquests. This was exported and later used against Israel mainly but has now spread.
After 30 years it is now part of Iran's culture and has many tens of thousands of adherants. Perhaps Hundreds of thousands.
It is a short step to extend the culture even further on a NATIONAL level.
This may be what is now being attempted to precipitate the return of the Mahdi ?
Iran is preparing to become a Shaheed Nation and that involves commiting suicide in the destruction of another.
