It would appear that Olmert has got egg in his face when he made his remarks about retreating behind the Security barrier on the eve of the Palestinian elections anticipating a Fatah victory. Only Sharon had the stature & background and following to follow it through in Gaza. But I would have thought that in the new reality of the Hamas victory - I would not have thought that the present or newly elected government would have the mandate to carry out any further unilateral withdrawals in the West Bank for the forseeable future. I am sure that the Israeli's are mature enough to draw the right conclusions - and I agree with Ted - that this will mean a shift to the right as both Kadima & Labours policies on a settlement with the Palestinians are now discredited and they can't be taken seriously if they continue to advocate concessions to a deadly enemy inside a political vacuum. I disagree that it changes nothing. It makes the very next act of terror an act of war initiated by a state. The calculus of this conflict just changed, rather permanently, and not in the palistinians interests. They chose what they wanted, and they want war. The next exploding passenger, the next attack of rockets is an overt, explicit, incontrovertable act of aggression on the part of the "government" of the palis against the Israelis. This is something Israel can and should deal with. With overwhelming force and firepower. They need to win this war in such a way that the UN realizes that the only solution that will work is the one that is imposed upon it (imposed upon the UN and the palis). Israel has to do what is in Israel's best interests. Yes. The palis were supposed to do what was in their best interests. Since they failed at this so miserably, the divorce initiated by Sharon should continue. I don't think a land exchange should be involved. A population exchange makes more sense. They get Gazastan. Now move the rest of them in there. Thats theirs. Nothing more. Land for peace never worked. Its time to stop doing something that doesnt work and hoping for a better outcome. Since Israel had already concluded to act unilaterally, the election of Hamas changes nothing.
Israel must decide if further withdrawal is in Israel's interest. Does it make Israel safer? I believe the Hamas victory moved Israel to the right on this issue.
It is bullshit to talk about whether Israel should talk to them or on what conditions. Who cares. Israel has to do what Israel has to do.
