Did Israel Miss the Ball With Hamas?
Did Israel Miss the Ball With Hamas?
Debka, which I respect much and is often way out ahead of the media, takes the Israeli government to task today. Debka suggests that Israel was asleep at the switch by failing to prevent the rise of a Hamas government.
Debka describes the Israeli and American governments' failings, culminating in Vladmir Putin inviting Hamas leaders to Moscow, and concludes as follows:
"[Hamas's] rejections of every condition posed for acceptance or aid - recognizing Israel, disarming, honoring international accords – are not presented as the basis for negotiations. They are clear principles, laid down by tough-minded terrorists. Attempts at accommodation will be beaten off. Because of Israel’s diplomatic ineptness, Hamas is now dictating the rules."
My reaction to this item is, "So what? What is so bad about that?" Does Israel really have reason to be upset that a hard-line "government" has taken over the Pals? Haven't they just basically tossed away their last chance at statehood?
Isn't it possible that maybe Israel wanted a Hamas rise to power?
I'm just raising the question. Personally I think the Hamas ascendancy is a good thing for Israel. It certainly is from a propaganda standpoint. Sure, Hamas is going to get some international recognition and support -- but international support in the pre-1980 no-negotiation days didn't move the Palestinian one millimeter toward a state.
Just curious to know what others thing about this. Fire away....

Glanced at this and thought little or nothingof it but then a second thoughtcame to me:what if by playing ball with Hamas, Putin is trying to get a stronger hold on those arab oil countries as their dear friend?
