Scandinavian Scandals

David Frankfurter's take on our brethren of the "religion of peace"

Dear friends,

Cartoons of the prophet Mohamed printed in September in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten sparked protests, flag burning, and calls for boycotts of Danish products

across the Islamic world. Gunmen in Gaza burst into the EU office in Gaza City, and also declared that any Scandinavians there risked attack. Denmark also warned its citizens on Monday to avoid Saudi Arabia, after the dairy group Arla Foods, which is based in Denmark, reported that two of its local employees in Saudi Arabia were beaten by angry customers.

The newspaper apologised for offending Muslims, but the issue is not quieting down.

Zaman online of Istanbul reports that the interior ministers of Arab countries gathered in Tunisia on Tuesday to ask the Danish government to "seriously punish" the cartoonists responsible. Are they not au fait with European concepts of a free, independent press?

Of course they are! When Palestinian Television, which is 100% owned and controlled by the Palestinian Authority, broadcasts blatant anti-Semitism and incitement to terrorism, concepts of 'freedom of the press' are carefully and painfully explained. Palestinian TV cannot be controlled. Conveniently forgotten is the declaration of Abu Mazen in his Prime-Ministerial resignation speech of September 2003: "I understand that the TV belongs to the government ." In fact he almost cried because his Minister of Communications (on Arafat's orders) made sure that cartoons were broadcast instead of coverage of his own political activities. Europe cannot demand a change. For the last ten years they only paid about 25% of the Palestinian Authority budget that supports the broadcasts.

At least it will be different under Hamas. Won't it?

David
