Obama extorts a high price for the veto and the speech

By Ted Belman

On Monday, Jeff Daube, Director of Israel Affairs for ZOA, approached me and told me about an LA Jewish Journal article about the gun Obama reputedly put to Netanyahu’s head.

Knesset visitor blasts Obama and Netanyahu advises that MK Eldad accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of buckling under intense pressure from President Barack Obama, who wants to prevent any Israeli retaliation against the Palestinian Authority in its bid to win recognition as a state from the United Nations.

He (Eldad) charged that Obama was holding Netanyahu “at gunpoint” – the gun being the U.S. threat to go back on its promise to veto the Palestinian statehood bid in the UN Security Council.

Specifically, Obama has demanded that Netanyahu and Israel’s supporters in the United States pressure Congress to abort two pending resolutions to penalize the Palestinian Authority (PA) if it pursues its bid, Eldad claimed.

One would shut off U.S. aid funds to the Palestinians and a second would support Israel’s right to annex the West Bank. The legal justification for such actions, cited by many Israeli officials, would be that the unilateral statehood request would be a direct violation of the 1993 Oslo Accords.

Eldad said he was certain of the accuracy of his information, but declined to name his sources.

Obviously, Obama wanted to avoid the annexation bid at all costs as he wanted to keep alive his plan for negotiations. In his speech which has been liberally praised as pro-Israel he said,

I put forward a new basis for negotiations in May of this year. That basis is clear. It’s well known to all of us here. Israelis must know that any agreement provides assurances for their security. Palestinians deserve to know the territorial basis of their state.

In effect Obama prevented the PA from being penalized for breaching Oslo yet again. He wants to keep Israel shacked by Oslo so it is not free to act.

No doubt part of this deal is Netanyahu’s agreement to maintain a defacto freeze throughout J&S and Jerusalem.

35 Comments to Obama extorts a high price for the veto and the speech

    1. Andy Lewis says:

Before Bibi decides, if hasn’t already, he should keep this in mind: If Obama gets a second term, he can do as he damn well pleases. An open break (or at least as open as American political protocol will accomodate) might be the only chance for Israel’s survival.

    2. Bill Narvey says:

If Eldad can prove what he says, it would anger pro-Israel American politicians and Jewish organizations to the point it would be devastating to Obama’s credibility and his chances for re-election as the Israel issue would rise to come close to or match American concerns over the economy.

If Eldad can’t or for some reason, won’t incontrovertibly prove his accusation, it becomes just more background noise.

    3. jd says:

Not a big surprise that evidence proves what I have been most concerned about, that this whole political game at the UN has only one purpose and that is to apply even more pressure to Israel. In June when I went to meet senators and congressmen, our group was told that the quartet were meeting secretly in Europe to figure out how to pressure Israel through this political ploy in the UN. Telling our Jewish leaders resulted in their disbelief that the US would partake in this, that they were reassured that the US would stand by Israel. They also felt that our little group of nobodys would not be given such info and not the more powerful Jewish leaders. The way that Obama is playing this chess game is that he appears to be supporting Israel, while in reality he is just twisting the knife! Netanyhu should just have the courage and wisdom to protect Israel and stand up for her in the face of world pressure.

    4. Margy Pezdirtz says:

I agree with Mr. Narvey. Definitely, Eldad needs to come forth with proof – in writing, verbal or whatever, but proof and release it to the American public – and especially, to the American Jewish voters. We must stop this Obamazation of Israel into a pro-Muslim Palestinian state that would only endanger Israel further.

    5. Vinnie says:

Yeah, I’m not sure of the veracity of this.

These measures in Congress have no bipartisan support as it is, so far as I am aware as of yet.

The matter of cutting off the funds to the PA had about 60 co-sponsors, last time I checked, and all – every one – were Republicans. It might pass the House, but it would probably never pass the Senate. And even if it did, the president could veto them unless Congress had enough support to override the veto. That does not appear likely…Obama’s thugs exercise tight control of their Democratic charges in Congress where Israel is concerned, nice speeches aside.

The annexation bill had only 16 co-sponsors last time I checked. That one will never get Democratic support in Congress, period.

I don’t think Obama would take the political risk of issuing such threats, that could find their way to the public eye, over legislation that has so little chance of passing. I don’t rule it out completely, though, as Obama is not rational where Israel is concerned.

At any rate, since Abbas is going home empty-handed, he’s likely to be overthrown by Hamas, who’ll then start Intifada Three, giving Bibi the justification for destroying the PA, which we all hope he exercises, no matter what Obama says or does. Within six months, all of this may be completely irrelevant, and there’s nothing Obama can do about it.

Going forward, for the immediate future, look for Obama to soft-pedal overt pressure on Israel, just for election year purposes, and use proxies to compensate, such as France or the UK. Obama will do anything and everything he can to prop up Abbas in the meantime, as well as the Kinglet of Jordan. That’s what Obama will try to do, but I don’t think he’ll be successful.

    6. Ted Belman says:

Jeff told me that he talked about it with Steve Goldberg, VP of ZOA who is a lawyer and lives in LA. Goldberg had talked with Eldad.

      Every word is believed.

Many articles over the past week have reported that Bibi told Congress to cool it.

    7. Al Sheeber says:

This report is not sourced and appears to be highly speculative
though I would not doubt the level to which Bibi or Obama will
indulge in mischief. Perhaps the “envoys” sent by Obama worked out
this bad tatsting menu, but this is really way overboard, because
no outside entity is supposed to meddle with internal U.S deliberatiions,
infulencing U.S policy makers is a bad precedent. It is not the right
way for Israel to approach its needs, because it is contaminating
the integrity of U.S political discourse.

    8. Paul says:

It deserves to consider exactly what kind of gun is it that is pointed at Netanyahu. So what if Obama refused to veto the vote? So what if the UN suddenly declared some kind of Palestinian state? It has already been observed that there are many disadvantages to the success of such a declaration for the Palestians. In many ways, Israel would be freer to act than it is now. And how would threats against it change?

The so called Palestinian Nationalists always have one thing in mind, the destruction of Israel. Whatever happens next, we can be assured that it will include steps in this direction. The only reason Israel can lose from this change of events is if it fails to remember this simple point.

    9. yamit82 says:

An item I caught last week

Foreign Ministry of what state? Sept. 17

Lieberman’s Foreign Ministry is pressuring the EU and US to aid the PA, despite its unilateral UN bid.

Only Jews can be that masochistic.

    10. yamit82 says:

Eldad would not lie, it’s not him or it’s not in him and anyone who knows him would take to the bank anything he says to be true.

    11. Nannette says:

Bibi should call Obama’s bluff and see what happens. Obama’s popularity is very low, and if he goes against Israel, there will be calls for his resignation and removal.

Bibi should point out that the Palestinian state will be apartheid, and as Abu Ala has already said, Jew free.

The Palestinian refugees won’t be allowed in his new Palestine, because they’ve already been promised the land of Israel! And as Abu Ala has also said, he wants Israel to be a non-Jewish state (even though it’s the only Jewish state in the world), whereas there’s hundreds of Muslim and Christian states.

At the end of the day Obama already showed his allegiance lies with the Saudi kings, to whom he bowed so low, in deference after his inauguration.

    12. Ed Katz says:

This is a plea to all Jewish Democrats. As difficult as it may seem, for the sake of Israel and all Jews worldwide, change your party and vote for one of the Republican candidates except for the one Libertarian, who like Obama, hates Israel.

    13. yamit82 says:

Are you related to Mike Sheeber?

    14. BlandOatmeal says:

      Bill Narvey said,

“…the Israel issue would rise to come close to or match American concerns over the economy.”

When pigs fly. The economy is the whole concern of the American people. I’m a social conservative; but I wouldn’t breathe a peep about any social issue during the perfect storm Obama has created. America is broke and going bankrupt, and is led by the most corrupt people on earth. Obama is the Crook in Chief, handing out trillions of dollars to rich bankers while claiming to care for the poor.

Arafat and Sharon lifted up their hands against God’s people. May Obama and all like him end up as those two. Meanwhile, Israel should annex YeSh or do whatever else it damned well pleases.

    15. Clinton says:

Screw Obama, I am a supporter of Israel and I am not backing off at all from my support 4 Israel, no matter what Obama says or does

    16. goldi steiner says:

What is most frightening amidst all this madness, is not Abbas, not Obama, not the UN, but the of lack action, or i should say of timid reaction by Bibi, and the American Jewish leadership!

    17. HCQ says:

Still counting on America-Babylon Jewry? You still have the observant/religious American Jewry but the more they move to the left the more masochistic they become.

    18. HCQ says:

Spare me. That paleocon wants the U.S. out of the UN and Israel would do well to follow us out.

The UN is a perfect example of a pure “democracy” i.e. mob rules/majority rules with pretty much no checks or balances but one..the Security Council veto.

Israel will never get a fair shake in the UN because the OIC, with its other international co-horts, pretty much has a majority and the world needs ME oil.

    19. Norman says:

If this is in fact the case Netanyahu should call Obama’s bluff without hesitation. His bankrupt administration is dissolving every day and he won’t be a factor beyond 2012. Moreover Israel’s allies in the conservative movement and the Republican Party will only benefit if he is stupid enough to flip flop at this late date on his public opposition to Palestinian statehood on this basis. Frankly, its highly doubtful that Obama has the fiber to follow through anyway

    20. birdalone says:

as if Bibi can influence Ileana Ros-Lehtinen THAT much. The whole issue of foreign aid is on the table because of Egypt and Pakistan.

I was channel-surfing earlier, and saw a program titled “Israel tour” on what I assumed was a Christian cable channel, so I tuned in. It was all about stopping Obama from dividing Jerusalem (savejerusalem.org). I had never heard of the gentleman in charge, but watched for a while because Bibi had several appearances – filmed without knowing who he was talking to – and I started to better understand the very deep connection between tens of millions of Christian voters and Israel, who will have far more influence on their members of Congress than Bibi.

also today, a friend forwarded me the newsletter for a Solomon Schecter Day School because her granddaughter’s photo was included.
      The newsletter title was

“Rabbi [my edit for privacy] Participates in Presidential Phone Call”

On Thursday, Head of School Rabbi [my edit for privacy] joined rabbinic colleagues on a pre-Rosh Hashanah conference call with President Barack Obama. The President extended Rosh Hashanah greetings and reflected that the celebration of the Jewish New Year focuses us on hope and possibility as we try to make the world a better place.

The President recognized that the Jewish community is feeling tense about events in the Middle East (including the Arab Spring) and in the UN and reiterated America’s commitment to the security of Israel and to the notion that a just and lasting peace will come from direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The President spoke about his jobs package and initiatives to improve the quality of education throughout the country.

“It’s an honor to be invited to take part in a Presidential briefing,” [my edit for privacy] said. “The fact that the President takes time to reach out to the leadership of the Jewish community shows how important our community is to the country in which we live. Since our arrival in North America, Jews have taken advantage of the freedoms that America affords us and found many significant ways to give back. Our goal at Schechter is to nurture the next generation and to instill in them a deep commitment to their dual heritage so that they can lead rich, spiritual Jewish lives and be active and productive citizens of our great union.”

Considering what Obama also said during that conference call, I thought this was a diplomatic way of acknowledging the direct contact without being fooled by the “outreach”.

    21. Bill Narvey says:

MK Danny Danon,Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset and Chairman of World Likud just moments ago on the Fox News Mike Huckabee program has just confirmed MK Eldad’s advice that Obama/Obama administration has been putting exorbitant pressure on Netanyahu to make more concessions to the Palestinians or his UNSC veto of the Palestinian application to be accepted as a member state will not necessarily be cast.

With confirmation from two credible sources, that is good enough for me and should be good enough for all American Jews. With that, while America does have a solid friendship with and supports Israel, Obama is a back stabbing duplicitous liar in chief when it comes to his claiming he, like America has a rock solid friendship with Israel.

      Disgusting!!!!!!

    22. yamit82 says:

You give Doron not only credibility but that of credibility equal to Eldad? :)

      DISGUSTING!!!

    23. M. Simon says:

Bill you don’t have to say a word about social issues. The Ds will bring this one up:

      http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/09/the_democrats_2012_victory_plan.html

    24. M. Simon says:

The House controls the purse. If they don’t vote the money the President will have to steal it. Which he may do.

    25. Bill Narvey says:

Yamit-why so obtuse? Make your case that Danon and Eldad have no credibility.

    26. yamit82 says:

You give the great One too much credit he ain’t that good or smart to be sooo clever a crook. He is a shill for those who control him, those who got him nominated and elected and by that I don’t mean the electorate.

If you think a virtual nobody and black can get elected in America without some very powerful forces financing him ( I call it political venture capital) and pulling all the right string you a dumber than I thought. My guess is wall st. banksters especially Goldman, they must have known their financial empire was about to crumble at least a year before it manifested itself, they bet against their clients by leveraging, screwed them made sure of the bailouts and took massive profits and bonuses to boot.

      http://rt.com/programs/keiser-report/episode-187-max-keiser/

    27. yamit82 says:

Yamit-why so obtuse? Make your case that Danon and Eldad have no credibility.

I see the problem Narvey you don’t know how to read. I said Doron has no credibility not Eldad. He is a political likud party hack and a wannabee for the top spot. He is funded massively by Christian fundamentalists and says a lot of right wing jingoism’s but votes straight down the line with BB. The Christians love BB. I am not speaking or even criticizing his duplicity but saying; that because of what I have stated he has no credibility of being believed even when he speaks the truth. Eldad is probably the straightest shooter in politics and while many disagree with his political positions: all Israelis, left, right , religious, secular and even the Arabs respect him as an honest man.

Now you needed a second corroborative opinion, because A- you are so ignorant of what goes on here and B-because when the information is stuffed down your throat you only manage to swallow just enough bits to make you feel you have some real knowledge. You don’t.

    28. Georg von Starkermann says:

My father who was an SS Officer in Africa during WW2 told me on many occasions that you should never trust a Moslem under any circumstances. It is my belief that the President of the USA is a closet Moslem who like most if not all the Moslems in the world hate Israel and the Jewish People. Ever since Mr. Obama bowed down to the Saudi King and then was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for doing absolutely nothing, the American people learned that what was in the White House was a shill for every left wing nut organization in existence. Mr. Obama is in deep trouble both economically and politically in the USA. He knows it and you all know it. What does he have to lose if he allows a Palestinian State come into being? 78% of America’s Jews voted Democratic without even knowing anything about Mr. Obama, and even when they were warned by others, they still voted for this anti semite. So, maybe in the 2012 election only 70% of these Jewish voters vote Democratic. The bottom line is simple…they are voting for the destruction of Israel.

    29. abie says:

He who pays the piper calls he tune. The ball is now in Bibi’s court. Obama has reaally stuck his neck out for Israel and he expects a quid pro quo. Nothing comes without a price. That is the story of life.

    30. Ted Belman says:

Yamit. You are being ridiculous to attack bill on his comment. He said two credible sources. Stop your knee jerk attacks.

    31. yamit82 says:

My point was that Dannon is not credible and Eldad is any any follower of Israeli politics should know that. What he said in essence that Dannon and Eldad in his view are equals in the credibility dept. I say again that any follower of israeli politics should know that what Eldad says is credible enough but to put Danon on the same level is an insult to Eldad. Is that an attack? I think not as Narvey’s first comment cast doubt on the veracity of Eldad’s comment and thus on the person of Eldad.

Eldad was born in Tel Aviv in 1950. He is married with five children. His father, Israel Eldad, was a well known Israeli public thinker and formerly one of the leaders of the underground group Lehi. He is a resident of the Israeli settlement of Kfar Adumim and is a Brigadier-General (reserves) in the Israel Defense Forces.
      [edit] Medical career

Eldad is a professor and head of the plastic surgery and burns unit at the Hadassah Medical Center hospital in Jerusalem. He studied medicine at Tel Aviv University, where he earned his doctorate. He served as the chief medical officer and was the senior commander of the Israeli Defense Forces medical corps for 25 years, and reached a rank of Tat Aluf (Brigadier General). He is renowned worldwide for his treatment of burns and won the Evans Award from the American Burns Treatment Association.

In March 2010, in response to David Miliband’s statement that the Israeli cloning of British passports is “intolerable”, he commented: “I think the British are being hypocritical, and I do not wish to insult dogs here, since some dogs show true loyalty, [but] who gave the British the right to judge us on the war on terror?……During Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to Lebanon in October 2010, Eldad stated:

“History would have been different if in 1939 some Jewish soldier had succeeded in taking Hitler out. If Ahmadinejad can be in the crosshairs of an IDF rifle when he comes to throw rocks at us, he must not return home alive.”
      ………………………………………………………………………………………….
Danon was born in Ramat Gan, Israel, to Joseph and Yoheved Danon. He attended Blikh high school and participated in the Betar youth movement. Danon earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs, and Master in Public Policy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After his national service in the IDF (1994–1996), Danon was sent by the Jewish Agency to Miami.[1]

In 1996 he was appointed assistant to Likud MK Uzi Landau. Later on he was appointed the Chairman of the World Betar organization for a few years. Prior to the 2006 elections, Danon won 23rd spot on Likud’s list in the party primaries. However, the party won only 12 seats, and Danon did not enter the Knesset.

In June 2006, after beating MK Yuval Steinitz, Danon was elected Chairman of the World Likud organization. Danon was active against Prime-Minister Ariel Sharon’s disengagement plan during the referendum conducted by the latter in the Likud party’s central committee.

In July 2007 Danon, described as one of Binyamin Netanyahu’s biggest critics from within the Likud, declared his candidacy for the Likud leadership election. He eventually finished third. **** There were only four Feiglin was the fourth.

As you can see he never held a private sector job. POLIICAL HACK!!

    32. yamit82 says:

Would you say that the credibility of the Germans are? Do the Germans hate the Jews any less than Muslims? As I recall over 80% voted for Hitler and they all knew what they were getting, he wrote a best selling book I believe.

All we have to do is let Yamit loose and he leads us straight to his problem – rank, brazen anti-Christian bigotry. No one makes my case that he is a hate-filled, anti-Christian bigot better than he does.

    34. Clinton says:

The best friends Israel has is conservative evangelical born again Christians, and despite obamas hatred 4 Israel there is a high number of americans that supports Israel, just because the obama administration hates Israel doesnt mean that the american people agrees with obama and his no good administration, there is many americans that loves Israel and supports Israel and I am one of them.
