Glick: Saying it like it is

A time for courage, and action

    By Caroline B. Glick. JWR

Mitt Romney wasn’t a bad candidate. He ran a fairly strong race. He made a few errors. And he made many good moves. Certainly he was adequate. And he was probably the strongest Republican candidate among the primary field of contenders. That is, he was the best man available to run against Barack Obama. And he did a pretty good job.

Obama on the other hand, was a horrible candidate. He was mean and vindictive. He was contemptuous and superficial. He ran on irrelevancies like abortion and a fictitious Republican war against women. He didn’t give his supporters any reason to feel good about themselves. Instead, he used class warfare to stir them to hatred of their countrymen.

Yet Obama won. And Romney lost.

In retrospect it is possible that the race was over before it began. A strong case can be made that Obama secured his reelection in 2009 when he bailed out the US auto industry and so temporarily staunched the haemorrhage of jobs in Ohio and Michigan. And maybe, with the youth of the 1960s now the Medicare recipients of the 2010s and 20s, there are simply too many Americans dependent on government handouts to care about what happens in the future.

An equally strong case can be made that Romney lost the election before he secured the Republican nomination. He may have squandered his chances when he took a strong position against illegal immigration in one of the early Republican primary debates and so arguably made winning Florida, and perhaps Colorado a mathematical impossibility.

Many have argued that demography is destiny. And the American electorate has changed tremendously in the past decade. Government dependency among the white working class has grown. Government dependency among an aging population and a rising tide of single-parent families has grown. And the Latino share of the vote has grown. Today some are arguing that Republicans today simply cannot win the presidency, regardless of their candidate.

All of this is important because for the past four years, most Republicans, and most non-leftists throughout the world had been hoping that the Obama years would be an aberration. They had hoped and trusted that he would be a one-term president. All the policies he enacted during that term, on domestic and foreign policy alike would be reversed by his Republican successor, elected by voters who understood they had been taken in by a huckster in 2008. The US economy — the anchor of US power and the engine of the international financial system — would come roaring back.

In international affairs, the US would reverse course. It would stop supporting the rise of its enemies from the Middle East to Asia to Latin America. It would embrace its allies. The former would be weakened. The latter would be secured and strengthened. America would be safe and defended.
Alas, apparently it could not be. The American spirit has been overwhelmed by the European model of social democracy at home and appeasement and treachery abroad.

But all the dependency champions who celebrated on Tuesday night cannot stop the coming storm. The greatest advantage Obama had going into the election was not demography but the fact that the full consequences of his statist economic policies and his pro-jihadist foreign policy have not yet been felt.

Nationalized healthcare will only be fully implemented in 2014. Americans will only begin watching old men and women die because the federal government denied them lifesaving, but expensive treatments a year from now. They will only lose their doctors due to dwindling Medicare reimbursements in a year.
College students who got out the vote for Obama will only find themselves doomed to low-paying jobs and a life of indebtedness as they fail year in and year out to pay off their college loans, in a year or two. And by the time they realize what it means to be saddled with a national debt of $16 trillion, they will be locked into a government-controlled economy that requires them to keep their silence or lose their livelihoods.

Then there are the consequences of Obama’s foreign policies. The attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi exposed the failure of his strategy of appeasing jihadists and had the potential to sink his presidency by turning suburban voters against him in places like Pennsylvania. But lucky for him, the Benghazi debacle was small enough for the media to hide from the electorate.
Sure a US ambassador and three others were murdered. But four is not a very large number. And it was over in a day.

It will be harder for Obama to contain the damage of his foreign policy when Iran gets nuclear weapons and begins molesting US shipping in the Persian Gulf as gas prices rise to $10 a gallon. It will be harder for Obama to hide the effect of his foreign policy when American tourists in Egypt are massacred or held hostage and Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood government demands the release of the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel Rahman, the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing in exchange for intervention.

It will be harder for Obama to hide the dangers of his foreign policy when the Taliban return to power in Afghanistan and Al Qaida rebuilds its training camps. It will be harder for Obama to blame his failure on hapless American filmmakers when Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is controlled by a Taliban-aligned government that seeks a nuclear war with India. It will be harder for Obama to protect America with a gutted, demoralized military, demobilized under his command.

Rather than contend with these calamities, Obama and his statist, pro-Islamist supporters and advisors will blame their critics. Just as they blamed — and jailed — an American filmmaker for Ambassador Stevens’ murder, so they will blame overworked doctors, struggling hospital administrators, “partisan” lawmakers and “Islamophobic, neoconservative warmongers,” for the domestic decline and international mayhem Obama’s policies will necessarily cause.

With the critical election lost, Republicans have a very hard and thankless task before them. They have to do the hard work of opposing his policies with dwindling resources. They have the job of energizing, inspiring and expanding a base that is demoralized. They have the job of explaining to wavering citizens why the Republican alternative puts America on the right track.

Conservatives need to prepare the ground for their return to power. They need to make the arguments for ending the welfare state. They need to make the arguments for destroying the ascendant — politically savvy — forces of jihad at home and abroad. They need to argue against defense cuts even as the Obama-appointed Joint Chiefs of Staff abandon strategic reason for personal promotions.

And they need to write the books, produce the movies, found the television stations, and prepare the school curricula that will enable a future resurrection of the American dream.

As most people know, Israel, as the forward base of freedom in the Muslim world, is the first target of the Obama-supported, ascendant forces of jihad. As a consequence, Israel will be the first to feel the repercussions of Obama’s policies of appeasement and empowerment of Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Certainly, this is a horrible situation. But just as demographics have changed America, so they are changing Israel. Rising anti-Semitism and economic decline in Europe have dramatically increased immigration rates to Israel and those rates will only grow as the situation on the continent worsens. In contrast to the rest of the West, Israelis have become more religious, readier to embrace the free market and more eager to compete in talent and productivity. While Americans have joined Europe in dwindling fertility rates, Israelis have matched the fertility levels of their Arab neighbors.

Israel’s demographic and economic power have been largely ignored and undervalued. But the time has come to use them for all they are worth. As America enters its age of dependency and decline, Israel must end its age of dependency on America and begin to depend on itself. That does not mean that Israel won’t cooperate with America. But as America’s foreign policy becomes indistinguishable from Europe’s, Israel will increasingly need to take its fate in its own hands.

We need to expand the size of the IDF ground forces. We need to expand the size of the Navy. We should reinstate the Lavi jetfighter project. We need to expand our independent offensive missile programs, developing a serious cruise missile arsenal. And we need to promote a new generation of generals that is not psychologically dependent on their American counterparts.

As for the Palestinians, and the international, leftist anti-Israel cottage industry that supports and feeds off of them, the time has come to take our demographic advantage for a spin. As we decrease our psychological dependence on America, we need to increase our trust in ourselves. We need to staunchly defend and assert our rights to our land. And we must exercise our right to defeat those who deny our rights and seek our national destruction.

In other words, we need to begin applying Israeli law in Judea and Samaria.
True, talk is cheap. We can expect — indeed we were warned to expect — for Obama to turn on Israel immediately after the election. Obama can be expected to dispatch his political advisors to Israel to run the Left’s electoral campaign with the goal of defeating Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and paving the way for the return to power of the socialist, appeasement crazed Israeli Left. We can expect the State Department, (under the guidance of New Israel Fund alumni) to renew its attacks against Israel’s religious institutions and the Jews of Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. We can expect the US to abandon us at the UN. We can expect the US military to undermine any Israeli strike against Iran.

No one said any of this will be easy. But difficult is not the same as impossible. Within a year, the consequences of Obama’s failed domestic and foreign policies will make him weaker rather than stronger than he was in his first term. He will be hard pressed to pressure Israel when the US loses its leadership role in the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated Middle East. And Israel’s independence of action will consequently grow.

Our side suffered a massive loss on Tuesday.

But as long as we keep our minds and hearts focused on the fundamental goodness and truth that guide our path, we will not be defeated. We will endure, persevere and in due course, we will be vindicated.

Note to my readers: I am currently writing a book in which I describe the strategic course Israel and the US should take in relation to the Palestinians. To complete my work in a timely fashion, I am taking a leave of absence from my column until next spring.

Thanks for an other excellent insight. Although i cannot wait to read your book I am saddened by the fact that you will deprive the readers for a while of your erudite opinion.

I agree. However, I am concerned with how Israel will deal with UN sanctions, a withdrawal of the US UNSC veto by Obama,a withholding of US arms re supply in war as done by prior US presidents. I am particularly concerned by an apparent lack of discussion in Israel regarding concrete solutions to these problems. Are all the ideas for dealing with these problems and the Pal state UN bid, on ly ging to emanate from the few holding leadership in Israel at this moment? Is anyone aware of what the considered options of the current, and likely future, Israeli govt are? Are they only going to be reactive or are they pro actively coming up with intelligent options? Any body have knowledge of whats happening there now?

    3. James B - Montreal says:

For the moment, the GOP is toast! I cannot see another GOP President.
Demographics. 61% of whites voted for Romney. But 82% of non whites voted for Obama because 1) he is of color and 2) they want stuff in general.
If you remove white females from the equation, perhaps 70 – 75% of white males voted for Romney. The white females want stuff as bad as the black females, if not more. Many were stupid enough to fall for the ” binders war on women “.

For how long will this continue until their is a bloody revolution?

Re: almost all black people, they want stuff and the evil white man has to pay.

Interesting that black people and latinos do not go for gay marriage, abortion on demand and both communities are known for their church attendance, and latinos do not come across as staying home and wanting stuff. In South America, you no work, you no eat. Yet they and the females of all races, went for the Dems, the way a fly goes to something else.

Enough white Americans are no longer believe that Republicans are conservative.

Republicans, you have to do get back to their roots and dump these career politicians ( McCain, Hatch, etc..) but if the blacks and latinos are not into you and the white male still votes overwhelmingly for Republicans, America will have to go through Civil War II and split up along Blue states and Red states. The red states are better off without them, in general and build up their own industries. They can always visit.

i am in full agreement with you james.
on the ‘sarah palin would have won thread’, earlier, i have said the very same thing:
“and the $64,000 question would be, should there be “two” usa’s , and by the same logic, two israels…?”

on that same thread, the canadian otter was also warning that “For the generation born during the Obama administration life will resemble scifi apocalyptic novels. ”

      …sigh…
‘interesting times’ we’re living, my friend…

    5. lois lane says:

It is the new demographics that have polluted America-all those multi colored. We should get back closer to the kind of people that first established America. Pure White anglo-saxons. Time to weed out, the Africans, Asians, Moslems, hindus,
and especially Arabs and the other Semites.

    6. the phoenix says:

      lois lane Said:

and especially Arabs and the other Semites.

could you please define ‘the other semites’? lane?

    7. terence says:

      @ the phoenix:
I think it is quite obvious what she meant. She wishes to purify America of all its foreign elements. Don’t you agree? She wants to remove multicultarism from the American landscape. Don’t you?

    8. the phoenix says:

      @ terence:
      eaaaaasy does it. terrence.
i DO NOT THINK that her intent was to ‘purify america from multiculti’ as you claim, knowing FULL WELL that the true intent was to have a judenrein america. terrence.
having sparred with you in the past, terrence, i am not surprised at all that you would have jumped on your high horse to offer solidarity to ‘lois lane’.
i looked up this little ‘lois lane’ to see what previous posts may have been like, to gauge which direction the wind was blowing if you will…

i came up this reply of yamit to ‘lois lane’:

      ” yamit82 says:

I would agree but the same can be said for all religious, racial, homophobic, sexist prejudice. You are repeating yourself in every post. Say something new for a change.

That’s how ron feels and that’s how he expresses himself. You got a problem with that?

Rather than criticize and insult a good man with a pure heart. Why don’t you contribute something positive to any of the discussions on the various threads? I haven’t read any since you began to comment on Israpundit.”

      so there! terrence.
      i stand by my comment.
my antisemitic meter is pretty accurate, and all its red lights were flashing following the ‘lois lane’ comment
to hell with ALL antisemites! terrence.

    9. Donald freyman says:

      @ the phoenix:
Terence is making a valid point. If you wish to rid yourself of alien elements from America, Jews become fair game. For many christian wasps Jews, are not wanted, just as Arabs are not wanted. You will find this unspoken, hidden attitude among many millions of America. Time to wake up. To a great extent, Jews, arabs, latinos and blacks are in the same boat.
As the economy worsens that attitude will undoubtedly become more pronounced.

    10. Laura says:

No Donald, Jews are in the same boat as other whites. Antisemitism is coming from non-whites, especially of course, muslims. American Jews need to realize they must vote along with other whites.

    11. As for the Palestinians, and the Two State solution, we need to assert our RIGHTS, the Jewish People’sRights to the Land of Israel, without further double talk by Netanyahu and his administration. The day may come when the Palis will call his bluff, take what concessions they can get, and then claim more and more of our land.

And who will defend our RIGHTS, when the next generation, today’s students are — for the most part — oblivious that we have indeed rights to the land from Jordan to the Mediterranean.

While Netanyahu opposes educating our youth about the Jewish People’s Rights tot he Land of Israel (the San Remo Resolution, etc.) the Arabs inculcate in their youth the notion that Israel is an OCCUPYING state. Is it any wonder that the International community labels us as such — if we — The State of Israel, does not defend herself?

The time has come to act with courage, so that the truth can prevail!!!

    12. the phoenix says:

      @ Donald freyman:
      listen freymann,
what lois lane said was “Time to weed out, the Africans, Asians, Moslems, hindus,
and especially Arabs and the other Semites.”
this is a coward antisemitic keyboard vomit which begged a swift reply.
even though it was obvious what she meant, i asked her to define what she meant exactly…

‘terrence’ jumped to the rescue and now you.
sorry but none of you have a friggin’ leg to stand on!
lane’s comment was pure antisemitic bile – “especially Arabs and the other Semites”…
“the *other* semites”? and WHO, tango foxtrot might those be?
too coward to come out and say ‘the jews’???

and then an ‘explanation’ from terrence…
well gee whiz. now he is trying to sugar coat that crap with “She wishes to purify America of all its foreign elements”
you got that freirmannn? TO PURIFY
hell! shall i provide a loooong list of what has been accomplished in this america by “the other semites”??? in other words, by the JEWS, for those that still don’t get it…

      no, freirmann!
she wants to have an america made of the original settlers/invaders (“Pure White anglo-saxons”)…hey! gezundheit!
but that was NOT the intent, as i wrote to terrence. let’s not obfuscate what is clearly written there for all to see.

      and now you.
“To a great extent, Jews, arabs, latinos and blacks are in the same boat.”
no they are not! most definitely not!
i will not start a ‘can you top that’ kind of exchange re who is the most hated as who is for all intents and purposes (and has been throughout history) fair game for any illiterate magot of the “Pure White anglo-saxons” type.
the JEW has been the scape goat since time immemorial.
so do not put them in the same boat (typical leftard tactic of equivalency)with musloids and latinos.
and as far as blacks…you are surely joking, freymann, aren’t you?

    13. monostor says:

      @ lois lane:
The Arabs settled in the US at least two centuries later than the “other semites” that you refer to, who are here for more than 350 years. The “other semites” were welcomed by George Washington, the first president of the Republic in his famous “Letter to the Hebrew Congregation” written August 18, 1790.
I quote: …”It would be inconsistent with the frankness of my character not to avow that I am pleased with your favorable opinion of my Administration and fervent wishes for my felicity. May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants” …end quote.

    14. Stan Revich says:

After reading the above comments I can see where America is heading. Let’s get back to a few basic realities. For nearly 200 years or so the dominant American philosophical rationale was the concept of the “melting pot”. One arrived in America to achieve freedom and wealth. One arrived in America to throw away an old identity and attain a new one — to be an American, to be one with every other citizen in the U.S.A. You were to throw away your old nationality and adopt a new loyalty , a loyalty  to America. You could keep your freedom of worship as long as it did not affect your loyalty to the nation. But then came the Marxists of various stripes and for these various  leftists nationalism was their enemy and potentially catastrophic for their ultimate aims. Their goal then became to destroy the pillars that held up the edifice of America. One of the means was to divide the country into multiple factions, to pit one segment of the populace against the other. Thus began the adoption of “identity politics”. Pit the rich against the poor; the secular against the religious; the blacks against the whites. Make the Latinos more aware of their “separateness”, their own culture. Multiculturalism became “in”: Americanism was now “out”.And so was elected Barack Obama who lived and breathed identity politics. But another crucial factor was needed to destroy the old concept of America as far as the Left was concerned. They had to destroy the Family, the one institution that could overcome one’s oyalty to the State, the institution that the Left so avidly desired to be the ONLY object of one’s fealt. Thus came the attack on marriage. Thus came the sudden cultural legitimacy of single (read female) family households. Thus came gay marriage. Thus came the carnage of radical feminism. All memes adopted by Barack Obama. So where will we Jews fit into this picture? That is to be seen but I am not optimistic. I do not think we will fare well for reasons too complicated and diverse to go into now. History should gives a clue though. whenever societies have become stressed, become divided, become polarized and chaotic, we Jews have become targets. we are too rich, too evil, too separate , too disloyal, too everything. the saddest thing is that usually we Jews have been too short-sighted, too self-centred and too anxious to adopt a “Stockholm syndrome” attitude to deflect enmity to heed the warning signs.Remember the first part of Hillel’s admonition, “If I am not for myself, who will be?” As for the middle part — that has always been our psychological downfall.

    15. yamit82 says:

Donald freyman: Terrence: and Lois Lane are all one in the same.  Think “Sybil”He’s doing it again!  :)

    16. yamit82 says:

    17. yamit82 says:

      Stan Revich says:

    18. yamit82 says:

Stan Revich Said; “Hillel’s admonition, “If I am not for myself, who will be?” As for the middle part — that has always been our psychological downfall”.

History has shown Shamai to be correct and not Hillel. American Jews by any measurement are toast. The Message is clear. If the Jewish people are to have a Future, it will only be found in Israel. American Jews can either be a part of that Future, or they can simply disappear. At 5,200,000 strong, American Jewry will not vanish overnight. But its days are numbered. When the nation-state of Israel was resurrected in 1948, it was home to a mere 5% of World Jewry. Today, it constitutes the largest Jewish community in the World, and is home to over 40% of World Jewry. And Israel’s Jewish community is the only one in the World with a positive net birthrate. Due to ongoing terrorism and the enduring hostility of much of the World, Israel may not seem safe for the individual Jew. Yet, it is the only country in the World that is safe for the collective Jew.The American Exile will end, whether by Assimilation or Antisemitism — more likely, by a combination of both.

    19. yamit82 says:

Immigrants are normally a healthy national function if they meet overriding needs of the American society and can be integrated within a generation certainly not more than two generations fully. Hispanic immigrants like Islamic Arabs do not  lend themselves to the melting pot formula. In the Hispanic experience Legal and non-legal they are largely adverse to melting.  What supports their resistance to assimilating and melting into the general culture is their rapid growth numerically.  Too may in such a short time span reenforces their resistance. So over 50% are  now unemployed and are not employable either but are a major drain on the economies of the States where most congregate like California. No one knows how many illegal Immigrants are now in America Hispanic or others.  Any figure thrown out is an estimate and speculative.  Most figures probably for political purposes underestimate the real  numbers. In states with the highest number of Hispanic and other third world countries the crime rates epecially violent crime is the highest in the country.Native Blacks are not assimilable at least the majority. Look at what recent Asian Immigrants have achieved with little or no affirmative action and compare with Black Americans.

Warning:  The two groups most UN-assimiable in America are also the most prone to crime and are the most violent.

    20. monostor says:

Stan Revich, that is exactly so, you nailed it. I would add only the obvious fact that Obama needed the second term to consolidate the peaceful takeover of the country by the Far-Left. We’ll see the same scenario in a very concentrated and precisely tailored moves towards rendering the opposition useless, teeth less and powerless.  Prince Harry already started, Boehner seconded him, just pay attention to what they and others say. If they don’t talk always the obvious, read between the lines. The latter is a form of art that those, like myself, learned it very well living under various left-wing dictatorships of the past. Watch carefully the changes and developments that the implementation of Obamacare will bring to our lives for those are not only changes in healthcare as such, but well hidden – for now –  changes to our entire way of life. Obamacare is the “Operational and Maintenance Manual” of the New America meant to replace all founding documents, meant to “transform” the country into a full blown single-party-marxist-ready-to-embrace-sharia dictatorship.

    21. yamit82 says:

“Israel’s demographic and economic power have been largely ignored and
undervalued. But the time has come to use them for all they are worth.
As America enters its age of dependency and decline, Israel must end its
age of dependency on America and begin to depend on itself. That does
not mean that Israel won’t cooperate with America. But as America’s
foreign policy becomes indistinguishable from Europe’s, Israel will
increasingly need to take its fate in its own hands. ”

I agree with her statement.  It is an imperative for our ultimate survival.  Israel tied to America has no survivable future.

“Our side suffered a massive loss on Tuesday.
But as long as we keep our minds and hearts focused on the
fundamental goodness and truth that guide our path, we will not be
defeated. We will endure, persevere and in due course, we will be
      vindicated.”

Not sure I agree.  If Obama really throws Israel under the bus, it could prove  to be the one thing that saves us from ourselves, forcing Israeli leaders and the majority of the Israeli  leadership to start behaving and implementing Israels policies in accordance to what is best and necessary for Israel and no one else.

In 1967 we had no superpower backing and our backs were to the sea.  We were warned and threatened by America and Russia not to do what we eventually did.  The results are not in dispute.

To yamit82It is possible to be right and wrong at the same time. History is a fickle teacher. She often imparts mixed messages. Jews, as a people, have been saved many times because of its existential weakness — that of dispersal. One ought not be too dismissive of American Jewry — not yet at any rate. Certainly I would agree that Reform Jewry is, within 2 more generations,  a lost cause. Similarly with the Reconstructionists. I am a Canadian and in our country Conservatism Is still going strong and Canada’s Jewish population is still growing, though slowly. In the U.S. Orthodox Jewry, within those same two generations, will be the dominant portion of the Jewish population. By then I believe the majority of American secular zionists will have long left for Israel — as you opined that they should. In the long run you are probably correct but in the short run Israel needs American Jews as much as American Jews (should) need Israel.

Just as he falsely claimed soon after taking office that his (American) uncle had helped to liberate Auschwitz where my entire family was incarcerated. Those members of my family who made it through to the end were indeed liberated by American forces but that was at Mauthausen in Austria. He also toasted the Queen in London at a banquet in his honor while the national anthem was being played – what a “plonker” as we say here!Furthermore, I don’t like the term anti-Semitic. It is too ambiguous in this day ‘n age; why not call it what it is, anti-Jewish.

We wish the US people and country the best as always but I doubt it that will come from internal enemies. We have some experience on that here.
As to the person re elected there. Curiously he did not manage to win in any state requring voter ID. I wonder why? And no matter how hard I tried, the relevant folk in my State there never sent me my ballots… Overworked I guess. Anyway.
We in Eretz Israel are Jews with almost 5800 years of permanent history here. I doubt that another four years of intentional sabotage by Chicago managed characters will be of any long term consequence. Doubtless it will be bothersome and even damaging but the person will be long gone and Israel will be fine.

I don’t recall mentioning the Cairo speech. I know exactly what Obama’s position “On the Jewish Question” is, to paraphrase Marx, and I know also what he thinks about Israel. He made his position very clear every opportunity he had ever since. That speech paved the way for him to declare indirectly the acceptance of the idea of the re-institution of the caliphate and the new direction of the American policy in the ME that starts with throwing Israel under the bus. The rest is history. Watch the complete sweeping under the carpet of the Benghazi-gate.

      Stan, I am
not a Jew, but I have an inkling that for some American Jews the eagerness to please
hostile gentiles does not stem from a variation of the Stockholm syndrome, but
from a more noble (albeit equally detrimental in the face of irrational hate)
      psychological motivation.

I am referring to what I understand is a Jewish cultural trait even for secular Jews, i.e. the
wish not merely to behave morally but also to set themselves (through their moral actions) as an example to others, a wish to be “a light unto
      the nations”.

I can imagine that someone eager to see herself as setting a moral example through her behavior will only experience shock when confronted with an inexplicable (anti-Semitic in origin) hate. Expecting at least a slight approval for her positive intentions but getting hate in return is a recipe for mental confusion.

And in her attempt to realize the (commendable, to my mind) image she has for herself, i.e. that of a nice person who helps others and gets some sort of approval, she is forced to assimilate part of herself to the worldviews of the hostiles.

In the case of the Stockholm syndrome the motive for assimilating is fear.

In my proposed explanation it is a positive feeling, a wish to be seen as the good
      bloke one is.

    34. Rubin Katz says:

That remark about Paul Robeson was unwarranted and offensive. He was a great friend of the Jewish people. I’m old enough to remember him, he used to sing in faultless Yiddish, including: Und der Rebbe fun Berdichev Sohgt…. You have to take it in context of the times; it was ‘Uncle Joe’  then, before we knew what a monster Stalin really was. The ‘European remnant’ would not have survived if it weren’t for Russia and, I shall remain forever grateful to the valiant Red Army for rescuing me. To those doomed to destruction in eastern Europe, the Western Allies were a distant prospect and whom the world didn’t care about and remained silent, including Roosevelt. For us, salvation could only come from ‘Mother Russia’ and saying this hardly makes me a communist; I’m in fact a lifelong Betar boy! If you are looking for a riveting read why not try my memoir “Gone to Pitchipoi” which recently became available on Amazon. It is not a camp horror story but an inspiring tale of “adventure” of a boy on the run in wartime Poland, including Warsaw.

I disagree, Jews were weakened by her dispersal.  A hypothetical case can be made because of that dispersal and weakness, it delayed by centuries a return to the Land of Israel and let no one BS you weakness and especially perceived weakness is a Jewish disease.  If Palestine had had,  say 10 million Jews in 1948 do you think there would have been a war or would the British have gotten away with their duplicity? Would there have been a mandate to begin with?  Jews prayed for the return BS lip service but few did anything about it.  That’s another incomprehensible weakness. Our sages said: ” that one of the things G-d regretted was creating the exile because the Jews embraced their punishment instead of repenting and fighting to return.  I submit the Holocaust is one result and the irreversible trend of total assimilation in America is another form  of holocaust but will end with the same result the disappearnce of millions of Jews. The exile was supposed to be divine punishment not a prize for the Jews.  So whenever things get too comfortable for the Jews history is manipulated to shock them out of their complacency and apathy.

“One ought not be too dismissive of American Jewry — not yet at any rate.

“When I speak derisively of American Jews I refer to the collective majority not those still loyal to the Jewish people.  I can’t speak with much knowledge re: Canadian Jews but I doubt it is too different from their American neighbors.  I disagree with you re:  Jewish Orthodoxy  and consider them even worse than the secular Jews who at least have the excuse of ignorance with regars to Judaism and Jewish history.  The Orthodox in my opinion are  Hypocrites and by definition atheists in fact

.”In the long run you are probably correct but in the short run Israel needs American Jews as much as American Jews (should) need Israel.”

As the general collective of American Jewry is today constituted, I see many more negatives than positives.  Israel in the ways most important no longer NEED American Jewry because to gain their support we would need to dilute and compromise that which has made us Uniquely Jewish and strong  and become like them.

“That remark about Paul Robeson was unwarranted and offensive. He was a great friend of the Jewish people.”

      Robeson is long deceased so my remark is of no consequence to him personally.That he sang songs or a song in Yiddish, alone makes him not a friend. Harry Belafonte made Hava Negila into a major hit and is known to be not exactly a Jew Lover and certainly an Israel basher.;

Yes I am aware that the Red Army saved Jews and also killed some. I am aware that Stalin (the Russians) could have as FDR, done a lot to save Jews and didn’t, not even radio warnings as to German intentions and later what they were doing. Radio broadcasts could have saved many Jews lives who believed the German propaganda.

In Stalin’s insidious way when he and Hitler divided Poland they divided Poland along the lines where most of the Jews would fall on the German side.  He knew what was their intentions. I had relatives who made it to the Russian lines in time, were deported to Siberia, and after the war while the window of opportunity was still open the whole family walked  all the way to Palestine.  WW2 proved that the Zionists were correct, The Bund, the communists,  anarchists and all the rest  even and especially the Orthodox religious were wrong.

I am sure your story is riveting and even inspiring and I will read your book.  Congratulations  on it’s being  published

    37. Rubin Katz says:

@ Yamit82.By the same token I could say another Black, Martin Luther-King was a friend; you must be well aware of his definition of a Zionist that he gave to Harvard students. Anyway, I’m not into Blacks v Jews here. I’m fully aware that Jews were in the forefront of civil rights, both in America and S. Africa, and ended up getting kicked in the teeth for it. Isn’t it always like that! As Begin said, referring to Lebanon, when one goy kills another, a Jew gets blamed. However, when it comes to the war, I’m a bit of an expert by virtue of having lived it, and I only speak of facts. I agree, Stalin was no friend and when he and Hitler carved up Poland on the river Bug, it was not according to where Jews lived. You say he could have warned the Jews; he didn’t know himself until a day or two before Barbarossa and by then it was too late, and he wouldn’t have done it anyway. A lot of Polish Jews got trapped in Russian/Polish territory. I don’t need to tell you, Zeev Jabotinsky went from capital to capital in Europe to warn the people of the impending catastrophe but there were few places open to them anyway. The fact is the majority of Jews who ran east survived, and the Russians kept their border open. Admittedly many were later sent into exile to Siberia but they survived, like your own relatives. Stalin later became more paranoid which I will not go into here. My two eldest bothers were also ready-packed to run east, but at the last minute changed their mind; they didn’t want to leave their younger brothers behind; this would later help me to survive but would cost them their lives. My story makes a strong case for the need of a Jewish homeland that needs to be widely read. I didn’t do it for the money, thee isn’t any in publishing today and I don’t need it; in fact I had to pay to have it published in the US. Though my story is compelling, well-written and insightfully told, publishers today are having a tough time and are only looking for potential best-sellers.

    38. Donald freyman says:

There is a basic simplicity in the current situation. Glick realizes for sure that Islamists back western military intervention ( in Syria). Arab nationalists side with regimes they have long combated-Liberals side with Islamists with whom they then come to blows. Saudi Arabia backs secularists  against Muslim Brothers and Salafis against secularists. The U.S. is allied with Iraq , which is allied with Iran, which supports the Syrian regime that America hopes to topple. The U.S. is allied with Qatar, which subsidizes Hamas and Saudi Arabia, which funds the salafis who inspire jihadists who kill American wherever they can. Now that’s not so complicated, is it?

    40. Rubin Katz says:

@ Shy GuyI’m not happy about it either, but I have no influence on pricing.  $65 is only the list price, but if you live in the US you can get it on Amazon.com at $47.25 carriage paid.  It is published by a prestigious publishing house, Academic Studies Press and forms part of the series ‘Jews of Poland’ by Professor of Judaic and Holocaust Study, Antony Polonsky of Brandeis University and promoted as a study course book.  The publishers maintain that the story alone warrants the price.

    41. Rubin Katz says:

@ Shy Guy.  I should have added that I asked the publisher to consider doing a paperback edition, but they only do hardbacks.  Sorry!
