Secure America Now providing tools to oppose Chuck Hagel’s confirmation

    By Andrew L. Jaffee, netwmd.com

Chuck Hagel is unqualified and ill-qualified to become America’s Secretary of Defense. Hagel is too cozy with enemies of the U.S. and is openly hostile towards Israel, one of America’s closest allies. According to FOX News, Hagel “appeared to agree with the assertion that America is ‘the world’s bully'” and that he has “complained about the ‘Jewish lobby.'” Yahoo! News noted Hagel’s beliefs about the “‘Jewish lobby’ and its influence on American-Israeli ties.” According to Senator John Cornyn (R), “Hagel voted against a 2007 measure that called for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to be designated a terrorist group;” “In July 2008, Hagel recommended that Washington go beyond direct talks and establish a U.S. diplomatic mission in Tehran;” “in his 2008 book, ‘America: Our Next Chapter,’ Hagel appeared to suggest that the United States could live with a nuclear Iran;” and, “Hagel wants us to be softer on the Iranians, he thinks we should be tougher on the Israelis.” Given Hagel’s dubious track-record, the nonprofit organization SecureAmericaNow.org has been lobbying against his confirmation as U.S. defense secretary. SecureAmericaNow has provided a set of resources enabling concerned citizens to help block President Obama’s move to confirm Senator Hagel.

The organization has created an online “PETITION TO STOP THE NOMINATION OF FORMER SENATOR CHUCK HAGEL TO SERVE AS U.S. SECRETARY OF DEFENSE” which you can quickly sign by clicking here. SecureAmericaNow has provided a link in which you can find your two senators and easily contact them and tell them to oppose Hagel’s confirmation. The group has written an excellent, concise document with talking points you can use when lobbying your senators and/or discussing the Hagel nomination with friends and colleagues. SecureAmericaNow has made their talking points, entitled “Information Packet: Chuck Hagel’s Record,” freely available at this link. The group encourages you to distribute the information packet electronically and/or by printing it. SecureAmericaNow published an article just today entitled “Why are al-Jazeera and Iran Applauding the Nomination of Chuck Hagel? Tell Your Senators to ‘Vote No’ on Hagel.” The article contains a feature making it easy for you to distribute. Here are some highlights:

… Even more frightening are Hagel’s own Senate record and words, littered with anti-American initiatives. On Arab television, Hagel declared America, the “Bully of the World.”

FACT: Hagel opposed designating Hezbollah a terrorist group.

FACT: Hezbollah is the terror organization responsible for murdering 243 U.S. Marines in Lebanon.

FACT: Hagel advised President Obama to carry on negotiations with Hamas.

FACT: Hamas trains, supplies and dispatches suicide bombers and civilian-targeted rockets in its effort to destroy Israel. …

Like it or not, most of the world views us that way, sadly. We do not pick our fights wisely. WE should focus on what is important.

FACT: Hagel opposed designating Hezbollah a terrorist group.

Absolutely insane. Hezbollah is a terrorist group. Most of Europe views Hezbollah as a political party. They should ask Lebanese Christians what they think of Hezbollah.

FACT: Hezbollah is the terror organization responsible for murdering 243 U.S. Marines in Lebanon.

Thoroughly disgusting. But going against soldiers is not as bad as going against civilians.

That attack on the Marines does not make Hezbollah a terrorist group. Other acts make Hezbollah a terrorist group.

Hezbollah is indeed a terror group, but not by the Marine attack.

For ex: Menachem Begin’s bombing of the King David Hotel, since it was going against a military target, was not an act of terrorism, no matter what the British said.

Going against civilians is what distinguishes a terrorist group.

FACT: Hagel advised President Obama to carry on negotiations with Hamas.

Wasn’t Hamas initially aided by Israel as a counterweight to Fatah?

      http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123275572295011847.html – WSJ, a conservative paper.

Instead of trying to curb Gaza’s Islamists from the outset, says Mr. Cohen, Israel for years tolerated and, in some cases, encouraged them as a counterweight to the secular nationalists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and its dominant faction, Yasser Arafat’s Fatah. Israel cooperated with a crippled, half-blind cleric named Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, even as he was laying the foundations for what would become Hamas. Sheikh Yassin continues to inspire militants today; during the recent war in Gaza, Hamas fighters confronted Israeli troops with “Yassins,” primitive rocket-propelled grenades named in honor of the cleric.

I am NOT saying the US should talk with Hamas, but Israel does it too.

BTW: Israel is not the only nation to have armed its enemies.

During WW 1, the Kaiser sent in Lenin to overthrow Russia, but did not anticipate that Lenin’s Bolshevism would later cause the Kaiser to be overthrown.

We Americans armed Al-Qaeda to fight the Soviets in Afghnistan.

The British armed pirates to fight the Spanish in the 17th century; and they lated turned on the British.

My only point is that all nations do this, so Hagel is not unique.

FACT: Hamas trains, supplies and dispatches suicide bombers and civilian-targeted rockets in its effort to destroy Israel. …

Absolutely, but before one condemns the USA, should one condemn Israeli officials for talking to Hamas.

Hagel will appointed because Obama wants him for the same the reasons a woman picks a husband He looks good dressed up he is pliable and not so smart he won’t follow directions.

    3. yamit82 says:

      @ CuriousAmerican:
Who claimed besides you that Hagel is Unique? He is just an idiot not qualified for the office he is designated to administer for Obama.

Civilians are fair game in any war. Making civilians off limits, make wars almost impossible to end if the concept were followed according to the definition you seem to be using.

The rest of your relativism is just another attempt to equalize bad guys and good guys like saying cheating is OK because everybody cheats sometimes or steals pencils and pens from their offices etc. “No Man Is Without Sin bullshit” 1 John 1:8, Romans 3:10

    4. LEON BRUM says:

What’s the difference who is defense sect. Obama thinks just like Hagel.

    5. dweller says:

      @ CuriousAmerican:

“… Even more frightening are Hagel’s own Senate record and words, littered with anti-American initiatives. On Arab television, Hagel declared America, the ‘Bully of the World’.

“Like it or not, most of the world views us that way, sadly.”

To begin with, Big-Guy-on-the-Block — good, bad, or indifferent — is ALWAYS regarded by at least some as ‘The Bully'; it comes with the territory.

If what Hagel did was to simply state the case as you did here — i.e., “most of the world views us that way” — he would be on solid ground, having merely stated a regrettable but undeniable fact.

OTOH, if what Hagel did was to flatly proclaim that America ‘IS’ the world’s bully — as in, that that’s an objective fact, not merely the view of various parties, but his own assessment & the stone cold truth — then he was WAY out of line.

“Hezbollah is indeed a terror group, but not by the Marine attack.”

Quite so. I’ve maintained precisely that from the day in 1983 that it occurred.

“Going against civilians is what distinguishes a terrorist group.”

Yes, correct — assuming it’s done for political purposes.

      — A well-organized bank robbery by garden-variety criminals devoid of political objectives might target civilians (they’re softer targets than troops or civvy gendarmes), but one wouldn’t characterize that as terrorism.

“Wasn’t Hamas initially aided by Israel as a counterweight to Fatah?”

No. That’s a myth that gets a lot of play in some circles, but not so.

“[WSJ:] Israel cooperated with a crippled, half-blind cleric named Sheikh Ahmed Yassin…”

Hamas began life in the 70’s as a charity organization dedicated (apparently) to Qur’an study and keeeping Arab kids out of trouble with the law. What assists they received from GOI had that in focus. Had they retained the same objectives, there’d be no need to destroy them now.

The WSJ article you cited is quite lengthy. If you read the Journal piece carefully & in its entirety, you find that while it BEGINS by appearing to concur with the aforesaid myth, it’s quite clear from the subsequent text & general overview that the characterization of Hamas as ‘an Israeli creation’ is simply spurious.

Important Note: The titles of newspaper articles are not typically chosen by their authors, but by the EDITORS of the outlets in which they appear. Positioning & titling are strictly an editor’s prerogative. It’s not unusual for an editor under the gun of deadlines to read only the first few paragraphs of copy (esp. by an author whose work he knows well) before committing it to the typesetter for printing — while giving it a title which, accordingly, reflects only those first few paragraphs that he read. The article may actually go on to say something quite different from what those first few para’s may have suggested.

    6. dweller says:

      @ CuriousAmerican:

“FACT: Hagel advised President Obama to carry on negotiations with Hamas.”

Here’s ANOTHER FACT: Both the USA Dept of State and the USA Dept of the Treasury register Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Since October 1997, Hamas is one of 7 Pali Foreign Terrorist Org’s on the State Dept’s list; the other 6 — Palestine Islamic Jihad; Abu Nidal Organization; Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades; Palestinian Liberation Front [PLF]; Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine [PFLP], and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command [PFLP-GC].

In 1995, Hamas & Hezbollah were BOTH listed by Dept of Treasury as Specially Designated Global Terrorist org’s [SDGT], Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook was added in 1995, Osama bin Laden was added in 1998, and in 2001, DOT’s Office of Foreign Assets Control [OFAC] designated the Holy Land Foundation as an SDGT.

The State Dept & the Treasury Dept are both part of the Executive Branch, of which the President is the head.

What business does a nominee to the Dept of Defense — yet another part of the Executive Branch — have to be counseling the President to negotiate with a terrorist organization DECLARED to be such by not only his own govt, but moreover, by the very Branch that he LEADS?

“We Americans armed Al-Qaeda to fight the Soviets in Afghnistan.”

      No, another all-too-common myth.

We provided Stingers to the local, indigenous mujahideen — of which there were several groups of varying persuasions — but there was no al-Qaeda till some years later: after the USSR began pulling out.

Our mistake was NOT that we aided the mujahideen, but that we withdrew our assistance prematurely: as soon as the Soviets backed off — we should’ve stayed. Meanwhile the Saudis kept funding certain mujahid elements & importing others. There was no al-Quada (as such) before 1993.

“[B]efore one condemns the USA, should one condemn Israeli officials for talking to Hamas.”

Why? — does it cease to be a matter of principle merely because a given GOI talks to them? (how does that work?)

Israel plays Hamas off against Fatah/PLO because she knows that the moment she destroys Hamas, the world community will promptly renew its demands that she hand over the heartland provinces to “moderate, peace-loving Fatah.”

So, she keeps BOTH scumbags on just enough life support to keep each other in check — and if that necessitates talking to either or the other from time to time, so be it. I’d rather they did their talking to them with hot lead instead of words — but I understand.

The USA is not in such a position, however. There is no legitimate reason for us to give them the time of day — irrespective of what any transitory GOI does or doesn’t do.
